Hi @DiagonalArg, I'm so sorry this happened! Trying this locally I'm not sure how to reproduce, so I'd like to ask for details on what happened:

  • Regarding the selected messages, how were they distributed (such as a few in the end, few in the beginning, or all continguous)
  • Did you scroll back far (so the loading spinner would appear) before doing the deletes
  • How many messages total were in Note to Self?

Then were a few not far from the end, and I think they were mostly the "This Message Deleted" message.

I had hundreds, probably a couple of thousand, messages in "Note to Self", going back to 2019. After posting this bug report, I found I still have them on my phone. So I'm cleaning them up there, one by one.

@DiagonalArg We've discovered that the experience is a bit confusing - you did actually select to delete everything by using the triple-dot button in the top right, and then clicking 'Delete messages.' That option deletes the entire conversation.

When selecting multiple messages, you need to use the trash icon in the bottom of the window that replaces the composition area.

We're making changes to make this impossible in the future - when multi-selecting, you won't be able to open the triple-dot menu.

Many thanks for the bug report, and we're sorry that so many old messages are now gone.
