I think it's better if we could use simultanously a bump map and a normal map. That dropdown list it's odd.
The default material is only applied to the first material slot.
We just need to build the UI, the shader itself is available here:

3ds Max randomly crashes after a while during ActiveShade rendering.

Replace Global Illumination and Bounces settings by Diffuse Bounces, Glossy Bounces and Specular Bounces settings.
I had two materials that were going to use the same alpha map. When connecting the one map to each materials alpha slot the render fails to start (the 'poof' effect). Copying the bitmap and connecting each bitmap tthe alpha slots independently allows the render to run.
