It looks like Debian based systems like to store their files in /var/run.
Can you confirm that directory exists on your system?

Hi John --

Did a bit more digging, and looks like /var/run is used for the pid files but not lock files. Since I didn't want to mix the two, I took your suggestion and create the directory if it doesn't exist.
