Looks interesting. How similar would the code be -- could we use literally what we have now (and/or rename this all and the repo to w3c-h)?

Edit 1: If we were to rename it, what would the rationale be: is it enough, if we know that <w3c-h> is a custom element, to work out what it does from that name?

yes we could, but i think its worth keeping the original.
To make w3c-h workable with and without sectioning content would need the level attribute example:
the following is fine as the level is calculated by section nesting:
<h1 is="w3c-h">
<section>
<h1 is="w3c-h">
<section>
<h1 is="w3c-h">
</section>
</section>

but if i want to have without sectioning content and add structure the level would be required
<h1 is="w3c-h">
...
<h1 is="w3c-h" level=2>
...
<h1 is="w3c-h" level=3>
..
