paperman's Issues

paperman on Linux Mint 20

From: Thierry Chaverot

I've been looking for a replacement for paperport software for several
years, and it was by chance that I discovered your very discreet
paperman. From what I've read, it should be exactly what I'm looking
for. Unfortunately, I can't manage to build it.

My configuration :
Distribution : Linux Mint 20
Kernel : Linux 5.4.0-42-lowlatency (x86_64)
Version : #46-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT Fri Jul 10 01:43:58 UTC 2020
C Library : GNU C Library / (Ubuntu GLIBC 2.31-0ubuntu9) 2.31

I downloaded the tar.gz from there :
https://github.com/sjg20/paperman/releases/tag/v1.0.1

I extracted the tar.gz here : /home/thierry/Téléchargements/paperman-1.0.1

As specified in the INSTALL, I did :
thierry@MINT20WIN:~$ sudo apt-get install qtcreator g++ qt5-qmake
libsane-dev libtiff5-dev cmake libpodofo-dev imagemagick tesseract-ocr
tesseract-ocr-eng
everything went normally, I didn't have any warnings or problems.

then, I did :
thierry@MINT20WIN:~/Téléchargements/paperman-1.0.1$ ./configure
Info: creating stash file
/home/thierry/Téléchargements/paperman-1.0.1/.qmake.stash
Project MESSAGE: Type 'make' to build paperman
Project ERROR: Unknown module(s) in QT: core gui widgets printsupport xml

Then :
thierry@MINT20WIN:~/Téléchargements/paperman-1.0.1$ make
make: *** Pas de cible spécifiée et aucun makefile n'a été trouvé.
Arrêt. (No target specified and no makefile was found. Stop.)

Then I tried :
thierry@MINT20WIN:~/Téléchargements/paperman-1.0.1$ qmake
Project MESSAGE: Type 'make' to build paperman
Project ERROR: Unknown module(s) in QT: core gui widgets printsupport xml

I'm stuck here. Is there a solution?

Thanks in advance,

Thierry

Core dump when trying to list all or local scanner devices

OS: Ubuntu 16.10
Linux remes-linux 4.8.0-39-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Mon Feb 20 11:47:27 UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

What did I do?
I built paperman from current master (f50d007) according to INSTALL instructions. Ran ./paperman. Clicked on "Perform a scan immediately using current settings" which brought up a dialog box to pick a device. I first clicked on "select all devices" which core dumped. I then reran and tried "select local devices" and it cored too.

What was the output?
Here's a gist with the entire backtrace. If you'd like me to run this under gdb/lldb and get more information, let me know.

How to convert .max to .pdf

I installed Paperman and opened up a .max file but I can’t figure out how to convert it to a PDF! @sglass68 How can I achieve this?

Paperman core dumps when listing devices

Command-line converter?

Anyway to convert .MAX files to a modern format (.PDF, .PNG) from command line? I have a Debian but no windowing system.

QT5 support

Paperman can now be built with QT5. There is one known problem which is that the 'arrange by' feature does not update the screen. You have to quite the program, or change to another directory first.

I'll leave this issue open until I resolve that problem. Since it's a little-used feature it does not seem so important.

If you find other QT5 problems please submit new issues.

OCR error: "Maxview: Could not execute 'convert'"

Trying to OCR a max file gives me an error message that tessaract is not found. I installed tesseract-ocr and tesseract-ocr-eng, but now I get an error message saying, "Maxview: Could not execute 'convert'".

Can not install depends in LM 21

I tried to install the dependencies to build, however, I receive this error .

Packet libpoppler-qt4-dev can not be found

I need access to my old paperport-.max files and wanted to use paperman for this.

On my Ubuntu18.04 PC I wanted to install this:

`sudo apt-get install libpoppler-qt4-dev

Paketlisten werden gelesen... Fertig

Abhängigkeitsbaum wird aufgebaut.

Statusinformationen werden eingelesen.... Fertig

E: Paket libpoppler-qt4-dev kann nicht gefunden werden.`

but got the answer: not found.

Has anybody a hint for me, how to succeed?

Andreas

git fails: Could not read from remote repository

I am trying to follow your instructions here to compile paperman in Linux Mint 17.1:
https://github.com/sglass68/paperman/wiki/Paperman-cross-platform-paper-mangement-like-PaperPort,-was-maxview

The prerequisites installed OK, but this git command did not work:

$ git clone [email protected]:sglass68/paperman.git
Cloning into 'paperman'...
Permission denied (publickey).
fatal: Could not read from remote repository.

Please make sure you have the correct access rights and the repository exists.

What do I need to do?

Command line options

I have compiled and run paperman and the gui works fine. I have a lot of paperport .max files to convert to pdf and batch processing would be very useful. Invoking with "paperman --help" returns directions for running "maxview" from the command line, but my understanding is that paperman is the new maxview. Invoking with "paperman -p blah.max blah.pdf" returns "invalid option -p" . Running maxview returns "command not found"

Have the command line options been removed from paperman?

Thanks,
Jim

Compile failed with this message: error: invalid use of incomplete type ‘class QAction’

I wanted to compile paperman today because I have some old MAX files that need to be converted into another format. The compile initially failed with the error message:

error: invalid use of incomplete type ‘class QAction’

I looked around on the internet and figured this was a missing include happening in pagewidget.cpp. Attached is a patch of what I changed.

20200617-patch.txt

After this change I was able to successfully compile paperman. I hope this helps.

Thank you for everybody for your work on this project. I'm helping somebody recover some photos that are saved as MAX files.

Today I also updated the wiki page, where it talks about installing the pre-requisites. I updated this page for the qt5 version of the dependencies. I wrote down what worked for me today.

Relies on outdated QT4-core-2

It would be more convenient, and frankly easier to compile, if it would use libpoppler-qt4-4, instead of libpoppler-qt4-2.

The real dead end I'm facing is getting libqt4-core to install. However, this is all really stemming from this project being a bit outdated. I would just like to be able to open .max files on Linux. I can't even get PaperPort from the manufacturer's website, any longer.

QT3 no longer used in modern Linux distros, unable to build

INSTALL states:
"Ensure you have libqt3-dev installed"

but apt-get reports "Package libqt3-dev is not available, but is referred to by another package. This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or is only available from another source". Further research shows that QT3 has been obsoleted in Ubuntu for some time now, since the introduction of QT5. An attempt to force qmake and make gave me the following output:

heatheriac@Kaname ~/paperman $ qmake
Project MESSAGE: Type 'make' to build paperman
Project ERROR: Unknown module(s) in QT: qt3support

less worried about the warnings than I am about not being able to compile the application on Fedora. Any help greatly appreciated.

Installing on macOS Sierra

Hi @sglass68,

I’m interested in using this app to convert some .max files to .pdfs but I’m clueless as to compiling it on my computer. It would be helpful to have installation instructions.

Thanks!
