icc-alpha's Issues

Video and audio section (of case page)

Three points (from the sprint review on Tuesday):

  1. Is the title OK or do we need to call it multimedia?
  2. Replace videos with thumbnails.
  3. Add the link below to "See all video and audio from this case"

Is there something friendlier we can use as the title for transcripts?

Transcripts have an awful title at the moment, eg

ICC-01/04-01/06-Rule68Deposition-Red2-ENG WT 01-12-2010 1-71 PV T

Can we translate that into something that would mean more (and look less intimidating) to the average user? eg

Transcript: Lubanga case - Rule 68 Deposition on 1 December 2010

What multimedia is created each week?

What are the regular programmes that come out?

Do people want "audio visual" material or do they want to "watch a summary of what happened in court last week?"

Are we going to have "key filings"?

What are "key filings"?

Who says they are key?

Is it enough to have the filings related to major judicial events in the timeline on the case page?

Make a short video to introduce the situation

The video would:

  • Explain the events that the situation is based on
  • Explain how it ended up at the ICC (referral etc)
  • Explain why this situation matters

Suggestions from VW about content:

  • Map – world map with marked country, then map of the country where the crimes allegedly happened
  • Referral and the investigation
  • Accused persons or suspects and crimes – if it is video representing situation

Print style sheets

HTML needs to be the default publishing format with the exception of court filings.

We need to work out a way to keep the benefits of pdf, ie it looks nice, but make it work from the web page. This is to avoid updating things twice, ie on the web and in the pdf.

Can we change the domain name?

The current domain icc-cpi.int is helping no-one and making it confusing for people. The dual language with a hyphen means English speaking people have to know the French and French speaking people have to know the English.

A domain name of icc.int would make much more sense with the relevant language, eg icc.int/en or icc.int/fr, following the model of organisations such as the UN.

What are the issues around changing the domain?

Automated upload of court filings

An existing project?

How far along? Who is working in it?

Which sprint does this fit in?

Include compression settings to standardise pdf sizes, ie no big pdfs.

How can we provide context for a case?

Users want to put a case in context with other cases at the icc and other tribunals.

This is good: reassuring that icc is following a set path.

How best to show this?

"In the field" section still to be hardcoded for sprint 1?

The latest version of requirements (case-page-d4-r3) contain some content in "In the field" section of the case page. Earlier comments from Armin suggested to keep hardcoded content in this section. Do we have any further information regarding the required backend structure for this section or do we leave hardcoded web part for now?

How many cases do we need for the ICC Alpha to make it worthwhile?

We have agreed to focus on the Lubanga case and only to have the content for that case (filings etc) in the new Sharepoint.

But when working on situations and stages, do we need pages/sub-sites for other cases, eg all cases in DRC, without any content?

Without these other cases, wouldn't the situation page for the DRC just have the Lubanga case on it? Would this be sufficient for a user to get a sense of how this page works?

Where can we put preliminary examinations?

Preliminary examinations are currently hidden away in the OTP section, but this information is really important (0.62% of visits to the ICC website).

Consider having each country as a page in the same way as situations and indicate on the page the status of the investigation.

Do we need a case level menu?

Do we need a case level menu as a plan B kind of thing?

[AT]
I still believe that we need to have one more way of finding all the relevant material about the case rather than featuring everything with the read more links below.

It can be as expandable box, or something like that and in a mobile version it can be below the initial content.

Do we want to use copy as the UI?

Copy as interface

"creating a kind of ‘journalism robot’ that reads all the dry data and turns it into simple, direct, conversational phrases that link together in a (mostly) natural, human way."

This filing type in the case was filed on date and published on publication date.

The filing party filed it during the case stage. The original language was original language and the filing number was filing number.

You can download this filing as a size file type.

An example with this filing: http://icc-cpi.int/en_menus/icc/situations%20and%20cases/situations/situation%20icc%200104/related%20cases/icc%200104%200106/court%20records/chambers/appeals%20chamber/Pages/3050.aspx

This decision in The Prosecutor v. Thomas Lubanga Dyilo was filed on 20 September 2013 and published on 20 September 2013.

The appeals chamber filed it during the appeals phase. The original language was English and the filing number was ICC-01/04-01/06-3050.

You can download this filing as a 1.1MB pdf.

How to structure court filings in Sharepoint

Will filings be:

  1. Single set of collections which are then filtered by case OR
  2. Court records for a particular case to be under that case.

AT to organise a meeting to discuss.

Creation of Navigation Term store

To create Navigation term store based on discussion around the basic terms for the Term store and to provide the results for the situations and cases.

Which browsers are we going to support?

Important that as many people as possible can access the website.

"Support" = progressive enhancement = displays correctly and core functions work

browser-02

Google Chrome 33
Firefox 19
Safari 14
IE 8 8
IE 10 7
IE 9 5

These don't make the cut according to the 2% idea
Opera 1
IE 7 1
Chrome Mobile 1
Nokia S40 Browser 1
BlackBerry Browser 0
IE 6 0
IE 11 0

How to deal with filings and translations?

At the moment, there's a link to English, French, etc. but this seems a bit odd.

If I'm on the French site, I'd expect to see the French version.

If I'm on the English site, I'd expect to see the English version.

I'm aware translations are not available for all documents, but perhaps this could be made clear, eg "This decision is only available in English." if I'm on the French site but there is no translation.

The original language would be listed as one of the metadata fields.

What do we use at the top of the case page and in the url?

Thomas Lubanga Dyilo

Why this name and not use the case name or the shortened name? we will need a standard, for example, for when there are very long names – do we say Lubanga case or Thomas Lubanga name name name Dyilo. (if he has several more names, as other suspects do) [mj]

Initial grid, typography, palette

I've created a responsive grid, typography and palette for the Alpha. It is in this repository.

It uses Gridset for the grids (imported into the main Sass file)
It uses Compass / Sass - variables and built upon Innuit for quick creation of common patterns.
It uses Grunt to automate the creation of single minified css/js files.

How are we dealing with the language detection?

Current splash page is not good.

Given most people use the En site just default to En and have clear language selector top right.

Or could try some kind of detection - browser language/location

How do we deal with closed cases?

Several cases have been brought to the Court that do not proceed to the trial stage. How to present these cases to the public.

Obvious terminology (i.e., “case closed”) does not work because the Prosecution can in effect reopen a case with new evidence. But for clarity’s sake, we need to say “case closed” anyway, and just clarify how the ICC system works. [mj]
