doc's Issues

Installing Unbuntu 18.04

I had some trouble installing installing Unbuntu 18.04 getting error message;

NMI watchdog: Watchdog detected hard LOCKUP on cpu 4

Finally resolved it however by going into the install menu, pressing Fn F6. Turing off;

nomodeset

Then selecting the install option. After installation was complete installing the following packages;

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-390

Then going into;

/etc/default/grub

And commenting out;

#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset"

Restarting the laptop and done.

Pull request

Hi,

I have installed ubuntu 17.10 on my machine and I had some issues with my laptop. I found the solution to all my issues and I would like to share the solution to everyone through your doc. Would it be possible to enable me to make a pull request?

So I added the way to install bumblebee on a XPS 15 which would help a lot on the battery life!

Thank you for the taking the time to read me!

Ubuntu won't shut down correctly

I don't suppose anyone has seen this problem, or even better found a fix?

When I try and power off my machine from the Ubuntu side of things by hitting shut down in the top right followed by shutdown in the pop-up, it just hangs indefinitely.

The desktop is still visible, but the machine is unresponsive.

Any ideas?

bluetooth issue after suspend/resume

Hi @rcasero,

I face the same problem of bluetooth that you describe on the last point of your doc. Unfortunately the solution provided is not very efficient for me...
Did you find a new way to fix the issue ?

I made several tests including checking if the bluetooth is soft blocked after resuming but nothing seems to work.

Thanks

Chris

Virtualization problem

Any ideas about grub console being displayed when launching the virtualized Windows machine?
I have exactly the same partition layout as you (windows/dell firmware uses first 6 partitions /dev/nvme0n1p1 .. p6, Ubuntu is on /dev/nvme0n1p7).
When launching the virtual machine, grub command line (grub> ) comes up, and windows does not start loading.
Any ideas would be appriciated :)

Tiny program icons with 4K resolution

Hi, I hope it's Okay if I ask a question here because no one did before me.

I've got a brand new DELL XPS 15 9550 on which I today installed Ubuntu 16.4. The machine runs really nice, but I haven't managed to configure the desktop properly for a 4k resolution. The problem is that some programs have tiny icons if I crank the resolution all the way up. Not all though, because I did find this scaling slider for menus and bars in the system settings under 'Displays', which allows me to configure the interface of most programs with a decent size. It works well for the log-on screen, the taskbar, and the desktop programs, but other applications such as VLC and Gimp would still have these teeny controls.

Please refer to the attached screenshot. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Regards,
JC

Battery Lifetime

I've installed the nvidia driver and the battery of my dell laptop is only lasting 2 hours (maximal brightness, always on).

Are you experiencing such a small battery lifetime as well? Have you done anything to improve this issue?

nouveau issue during ubuntu 16.04.03 install

Hi @rcasero,
Thanks for your tutorial it was very useful to install Ubuntu 16.04.03 on my Dell XPS 15 9560 (BIOS version 1.5.0).

I had only one issue, during installation from the USB (try before install), Ubuntu did not started.. There were some error messages related to the nouveau driver.

Finally I found a solution [1] that permitted me to boot correctly. I had to add the following boot parameter at startup:

nouveau.modeset=0

then everything worked as expected..

And, not sure if mandatory, but I also added as boot param:

nvme_load=YES

Touchpad troubleshooting question for 16.04 on XPS 15

Hi,

First of all, thank you for the ubuntu install guide for XPS 15 - saved me countless hours I am sure, and also confirmed that ubuntu is possible on Dell XPS!

When I try to run the Touchpad troubleshooting step from this link:

"PCIe Bus error severity=Corrected when clicking" on 'try Ubuntu without installing'

I am trying to install Ubuntu 16.04 alongside windows 10.
I followed all the pre requisites you listed in your article, but unfortunately when I hit enter on "Try Ubuntu without installing" I'm having endeless error logs, something like the one in the title, I can't exactly see as it scrolls infinitely and doesn't display the logs well.

I have tried to include "pci=nomsi" in the command, which allows me to get the loading screen of ubuntu, but after a few seconds it freezes. The loading bar is frozen and the usb stick light stops blinking.

Do you have any idea what could be the reason of this failure?

disable BitLocker

great wiki on xps 9560/ubuntu!

just found that extra step is needed before changing SATA mode.
in Windows one needs to disable BitLocker before the SATA change.
Otherwise windows would not start - BitLocker would say 'you must enter your recovery key to access startup settings'

VirtualBox troubleshooting

I recently bought a new Dell XPS 15 9560 and followed your awesome guide to install Ubuntu 16.04 (or rather KDE Neon to be specific) alongside Windows.

The VirtualBox part did not work out to be just as easy as the other parts, so I share my experience with you, maybe you want to integrate it for others:

I did not install the virtualbox-ext-pack package as that conflicts with both virtualbox-5.1 and virtualbox-5.2 (which I ended up using) from the 3rd-party repository.

Otherwise, the setup worked as described by you. But the VM did only boot into an UEFI Shell instead of starting Windows. The way I fixed this (with help from here):

  1. In the UEFI Shell, type fs0: [enter] and edit startup.nsh [enter].
  2. Type \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi, save with Ctrl+S and quit with Ctrl+Q.
  3. Restart the VM. After a 5 second delay, this script is executed automatically to start Windows (evertime the VM boots up).

After changing away from raid, laptop does no longer start

So I changed away from raid to ahci, and it refused to boot at all, windows said the something was wrong: INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE After changing back I was able to boot again without a problem.

Also on that note: the Dell OS Recovery Tool seems to fail to extract the image on 2 different usb drives and 2 different computers.

Ubuntu 16.04 lost sound

Sound is not working and it shows dummy output. Doing pacmd list-cards displays no cards. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Personal Experience on bad time install of Ubuntu... 17.10

Dear Ramon,

I saw you create a nice and complete page to help guys installing UBUNTU 16++ on DELL 9560.

https://github.com/rcasero/doc/wiki/Ubuntu-linux-on-Dell-XPS-15-(9560)

Out is plenty of similar pages, and I prefer not to waste internet with one more. Hence I supposed
that mailing to you my little experience it could benefit a small integration to your wiki.

Five days ago I received my new DELL 9560 as an upgrade of my previous 9550. I was already
aware of bad times installing 9550 and looked out for an updated tutorial on 9560 before start.
Most of the instructions on your page were the same I found for 9550, and I followed your tutorial step by step. Accidentally I found two problems more:

  1. Installation process sometimes crashed at start;
  2. In other boot, during the installation, it crashed at the end, when installing grub2 on EFI.

I lost almost two days in figuring out what happened and restore this computer since I found no
documentation explaining the grub2 installation process.

At the very end I discovered that most of the user knows that latest NVIDIA drivers were unisuitable for this machine, and you have to fall back to nVIDIA 381.22 to have a stable video interaction. This is properly mentioned in your Wiki, what was not mentioned is that it is not wise to install ubuntu with the standard option. These infact will use the most recent drivers which can corrupt, halt or hang the system with unpredictable state.

Hence (EVEN) during the first installation it is wise to add the nomodeset option to the Ubuntu/Mint grub-menu before starting, otherwise the installation procedure may fail and crash your filesystem.

More in details, my installation failed while writing grub2 the very first time, and I had severe difficulties in discovering the error since there was no clear diagnosis of the problem with standard installation tools. At the end of my analysis I discovered that the failure on the first attempt created a corrupted EFI-Filesystem that prevented all of my subsequent attempts (even with the correct nomodeset options).

In such case the right tools to solve this issue are:

  • Boot only in live mode (Ubuntu or Mint) with nomodeset option
  • Manually use ubiquity -b option to prevent grub installation during OS install
  • Use FSCK on EFI partition to repair corrupted block
  • Use boot-repair to ensure grub install.
  • downgrade the video driver
  • Possibly install the dual video card microcode
    (http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2016/04/switch-intel-nvidia-graphics-ubuntu-16-04/)
  • Restore the driver use removing nomodeset from grub-menu

PS
[boot-repair has also the nomodeset switch in the adv. configuration to ease following tasks]
If you simply use boot repair without repairing EFI partition, grub or boot-repair will tell you that EFI is readonly, but this is only a consequence of a previous error that can be shown through dmesg.

I hope this can help your readers

Ubuntu 18.04

Hello,

I am trying to get started with linux on my new laptop as I am studying computer science. I am having trouble installing Ubuntu 18.04 on this particular laptop, just like I had trouble installing and using previous versions of ubuntu on it, which is preventing me from making linux my primary OS. I followed the required steps and can "sometimes" boot into the live USB (not always). And I didnt have to set nouveau.modeset=0. When I am able to boot into it, I follow the install instructions till the last prompt, after which the installer simply force closes. Rebooting/shutdown instantly freezes the entire machine. I would like some help installing 18.04 and I hope this guide is updated for it. I am willing to provide logs but I am not sure which ones to provide and how to obtain them. Thank you in advance.

4K Resolution Issues

I've been pulling my hair for the past two days trying to figure out why my 4k screen on my XPS would not scale properly on Ubuntu.

Finally found this article.

I know the 9560 isn't coffeelake, but I'm pretty sure a lot of people with 9570s are going to be using your wiki.

I think making it a bit more generic would be a good idea.

The solution for the resolution problem for coffeelake systems:

Add this to grub boot loader options: i915.alpha_support=1

Severe mouse freezing lagging issues

Hi, really struggling with getting the mouse working properly on my Jan '18 xp 9560 on Ubuntu 17.10.

It lags and freezes whenever there is system load. After the machine has been up a while it is almost unusable and extremely fustrating.

Has anyone seen this before? I've tried using different drivers (nvidia, intel) but with no luck. I've tried Unity, as others have mentioned, but still with no luck.

I'm at the end of my tether with this!

I'm considering installing 16.04 as people seem to have more luck with it.

Any thoughts? I'm desperate here! :-)

Graphics card: nVidia n17P-G0

Hello,

I tried to follow your instructions on dual booting Ubuntu and Windows on Dell XPS 15. However for my brand new XPS 15 I forgot to update nVidia n17P-G0. I also accidentally wiped the windows partition and does not have a recovery stick. I wonder if the graphics driver by Dell is absolutely necessary, because I constantly experience problems with GTX 1080 (described in this askubuntu post) and could not find a good fix.

    sudo dpkg -i *.deb

  2. Don't use Bumblebee - it bad works with Ubuntu 16.04. So delete this. And make sure you use Nvidia proprietary driver (384.111 current)
    sudo ubuntu-drivers autoinstall OR
    sudo apt install nvidia-prime nvidia-settings nvidia-384

  3. Use Intel micro-code
    bash -c "$(curl -fsSL http://bit.ly/IGFWL-install)"

  4. Change grub
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_rev_override=1"
    sudo update-grub2
