nixos-artwork's Issues

Specify License of Files / Images

A license file should be added to the repository to specify the licensing of the nixos images, logo, files, etc.

Example: Can I use these files to make my own stickers? Put it on pamphlets? etc.

Square logo?

I was surprised that the logo is very close to square but it is not square. Is this intentional? Would a logo revision that makes it square be welcome?

Logo for 23.05 release

Hello there! I am release manager for this 23.05, nice to meet you all.

The next NixOS release is planned for the end of May 2023.

The animal this time is supposed to be aโ€ฆ stoat? (I learnt this new word in English.)

@ardek66 @rwxg @mogorman does anyone of you would be interested to produce a new logo?

Create a slide-show for the FOSDEM

We should make a nice and entertaining slide-show to capture the attention of persons who are walking by a stand and are willing to stop watch some animated content promoting Nix / NixOS / NixOps.

Branding issues: logo and font

This is a follow up to the discussion on the mailing list: https://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg16520.html

There are a number of versions of the logo floating around, and no font is used consistently for "NixOS".

@gfsmonk has proposed some alternatives: https://github.com/gfxmonk/nixos-logo-ideas/tree/master/exports

The main issue with the current logo is the colors (IMO). The standard version http://nixos.org/logo/nixos-logo-only-hires.png is mainly blue, with some red. This can either look like purple or blue depending on the monitor, or the printing process. To work around this, a people who have printed their own t-shirts/stickers/banners etc. have chosen alternative colors (generally blue, rather than purple). A number of people have also used a purely black logo on a white background, and a purely white logo on a black background.

A designer at FOSDEM (@plastelina) told me that it should be pretty easy to pick out suitable colors and ensure they are consistent on all media. I know she had some ideas for the logo too, but ran out of time to complete them. Perhaps she can help us out here, or we can get help from some others at @opensourcedesign.

The initial font used for the NixOS logo was Myriad Web Pro, which is a proprietary font (used by Apple). Currently on nixos.org Liberation Sans is used, which is pretty generic. It would be great to adopt a Free font which is distinctive and suitable for the project.

It would be great to solve these issues (perhaps by choosing one of @gfxmonk's designs + a font), and it would make it easier for people to design consistently branded NixOS swag \o/

New logo

Hey there,

I had some free time today so I decided to redesign the logo, what are your thoughts?

Example propaganda image:

Logo (png):

Banner (for github readme):
Imgur

This is a vector (svg) so you can scale it at any size. You are free to do whatever you want with it (if you don't think it is too ugly haha), that's a gift for this awesome OS that I'm using everyday!

Designer Information

Hi. I was trying to find information about who designed the current logo, but I've been unsuccessful so far. Can anyone point me to some information about the current design/branding, it's origins/designer? Thanks.

4K default wallpaper

I've just installed NixOS on a system with a 4K screen and the default wallpaper looks a bit blurry as its being upscaled from 1080p. Obviously I can change the wallpaper trivially but given the increasing prevalence of 4K displays it would be nice to have some crisp native-res wallpaper out of the box :-)

NixOS brand in 14.11

I aim for something very simple, without over-extending.

Additional wallpapers for display managers and other desktop managers are of course welcome.

Add repository guidelines

I have some content that might fit this repository.

  • Nix Stickers files (illustrator CS5 format, can be converted to svg but might lose some information in the process such as cut lines)
  • A few wallpapers (I am not a graphist and made them quickly, so they are very simple with a relative quality)

Is it the place to share it?

It would be nice to have simple guidelines in the readme explaining:

  • Accepted resource types(wallpaper, DM themes, ...)
  • File format and other details that might important (image size for wallpapers)
  • contributing rules

Logo for NixOS 23.11 Tapir

The animal for this release is a tapir.

Logo not visible in dark mode in this repo's README

Describe the bug

The NixOS Logo is not clearly visible in dark mode in GitHub

Steps To Reproduce

Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Go to appearance in GitHub
  2. change it to dark mode
  3. see the bug

Expected behavior

I expect the logo to be seen more clearly.

Screenshots

Not needed since it can be reproduced by anyone just follow the steps I have above.

Additional context

Add a sticker like effect to make it support dark mode too

Logo for the 22.11 Release

The next NixOS release is planned for the end of November 2022.

The animal this time is supposed to be a raccoon.

@mogorman Would you be up for that?

License / Attribution for existing artwork.

Going forward, it would be best if every contribution is specifically licensed under a license, whichever it is. This issue lists license and attribution issues. This is only a partial duplicate of #17, #17 is where an actual license for the repository should be discussed.

The logo's license and attribution is known. Nix-dev mailing list, Sun Oct 2 08:49:55 CEST 2016.

Gnome wallpaper

The wallpaper was first shared in issue #1.

The background used in the wallpaper seems to originate from a "common" wallpaper found on the web. I could not link it to an original FLOSS source. It is unknown if it is okay to re-distribute or remix.

No specific license or attribution

Ideally, we'd need these authors to specify a license under which the artwork can be used, and hopefully re-mixed. The contributions looked original enough to not cast any doubt about who the authors were. It is assumed the contributor is thus the author.
