i got this when i did matebook-applet -vv

but im sure huawei-wmi is installed

You need not only huawei-wmi package (which is systemd harness for the driver), but also the newer version of the driver itself (kernel 5.3 has version 2 as far as I know, you need version 3). It has not been packaged as a .deb, but the instructions for installation are pretty straightforward.
As for scripts, they have never been tested for kernels >5.0, and they are not really supposed to work on those kernels.
