Have you considered Go plugin?
No isolation though

@AkihiroSuda I had not. I think it is important to have proper isolation if we would use images for distribution. Using an image also gives much more control for the frontend to define its dependencies.

I didn't have a good experience when I last tried go plugins. I built buildkit as a containerd plugin but it only worked when I built both containerd and buildkit on the same node(or same container). That made it pretty much useless as I'm not releasing containerd. I assume that osx/windows support is coming?

OK, images would be fine for frontend plugins.

However, I'm a little worried about that we might need to introduce another plugin infrastructure for worker plugins, which are unlikely to be provided as images (unless the plugin binary is statically built).

Not directly related to this github issue, but is it ok to have two different plugin infrastructures?
