linuxdeploy's Issues

How to run vsftpd service?

Excuse me, I'd like to ask a question.
I installed vsftpd and ftp using "yum".
And when I typed "sudo service vsftpd start", it told me:

"Redirecting to /bin/systemctl start vsftpd.service"
"Running in chroot, ignoring request".

by using ftp command then, I received an failed message.

I'm a Linux newbie indeed, would you like to tell me how to run a ftp server in Linux Deploy?
Thanks and best regards.

grey screen when launching linuxdeploy script from SL4A

Hello,

I just made a little script like that:

!/system/bin/sh

su -c 'sh /data/local/bin/linuxdeploy start'

if I launch the script from an Android terminal (JS Terminal), that work without problem, I could connect with my Android VNC viewer.

if I made the same script in SL4A, and launch the script, when I connect with VNC, I have a grey screen with a black cross who move with my finger......
( same problem if I use SManager )

what's happened?
Could you make me on the way?

Thanks

Framebuffer not working on S3?

Hey so I have tried all that I know of to get framebuffer working on the S3 I installed also

xserver-xorg-input-multitouch

and the other xserver packages, what am I missing?

EDIT: the log says it is skipping Framebuffer, but I have it activated in the menu.

How to set locale to zh_CN.UTF-8 in archlinux

I'm using the newest version of Linux Deploy, and I found that when I set the locale in rc.conf as the instruction provided by ArchLinux's website:
locale-gen
and changed to LOCALE="zh_CN.UTF-8"
and restarted LinuxDeploy,

I opened LXTerminal, and input locale command, it telled the locale was still en_US.UTF-8.

Would you like to tell me how can I make the locale setting take effect?
Thanks!

Only Update ENV - and nothing more?

Need to update
Updating configuration file - done!
Need to update ---
Try Menu ---
is all the script produces.

linuxdeploy.log says:
[17:39:54] fdisk: can't open '/dev/block/loop1'
[17:39:54] fdisk: can't open '/dev/block/loop2'
[17:39:54] fdisk: can't open '/dev/block/loop3'
[17:39:54] fdisk: can't open '/dev/block/loop4'

[17:39:54] fdisk: can't open '/dev/block/loop6'
[17:39:54] fdisk: can't open '/dev/block/loop7'

I want to install the linux system in an external sdcard:
/mnt/external_sd/Linux-4-Arm

I am using Android 4.1.1
Do you have any ideas?

Install MySQL and PostgreSQL in Debian

First, I would like to comment that you have done an excellent job to easily install Linux onto an Android device.

I am trying to install MySQL and PostgreSQL inside Debian Wheezy but both installations using aptitude failed. Is there anything that I should look out for? Do you need my log files?

Thanks.

Inclusion into F-Droid FOSS repos

Hi! Thanks for making this great software and for its ease of use - the easiest chroot creator of its kind for the platform IMO. Right now we are discussing its inclusion in the Free Open Source Android repo know as F-Droid. This will allow the app to be available outside the Google Play Store which which is invasive to the system and threatens privacy. This is the discussion thread:

http://f-droid.org/forums/topic/linux-deploy/

Almost everything seems to be OK to allow immediate inclusion. The only obstacle is the presence of a mk2fs binary that does not have the corresponding source published. If you can release the code and/or find an alternate way as to not depend on the binary blob that would make it ready for the repo. Please feel free to discuss this here or there - as you wish. I appreciate your work and effort in making this software possible.

no input in frame buffer mode w/ debian wheezy /wo android UI

Hi-

I've go the graphics for framebuffer mode working but I can't get any input working. I've tried /dev/input/event0 event1 event2 mouse0 and event*. I've also tried using an external keyboard and mouse but nothing. Is there some trick to getting this to work? I had to disable the android UI to get the graphics to work, but now I can see it but can't do anything.

Ubuntu GUI only, how to use it?

I installed Linux Deploy on my Samsung Nexus S with CyanogenMod 9. I installed Ubuntu as my distro and i deselected the options regarding ssh and desktop environment since i'm not sure if my phone can handle graphics smoothly with its cpu and ram. I want to try with a no gui installation. The installation went fine i guess, except 3 packages weren't installed: libcomerr2, libedit2, lib5crypto3 anyway i think it's not a big deal and i may manually install them later eventually. After the installation ended i pressed the button with the arrow that allows to mount the partition and eventually start services. Now what should i do? I didn't get to a command line after that. Should i use a terminal app for android? What's the procedure? Sorry for the maybe stupid question.

Installing ubuntu on Sony Xperia Acro S does not work, package errors

Hi Meefik,

Thank you for your excellent programme! I managed to install Ubuntu Precise on my Google Nexus 10 without any problems. I am now also trying to to the same for my rooted Sony Xperia Acro S (android 4.04). I use the default settings, but changed to armhf archtecture (phone has Armv7), Xfce desktop, and vnc resolution same as phone. Some packages are not being installed, which result in ssh/vnc not being available in the end for fixing these issues. I have tried to view the logfile /debootstrap/debootstrap.log but could not find this file. I have shown the results of the logfile below. Please let me know what I can change to install Ubuntu.

Much appreciated!

Linux Mint support

Any plans to add Linux Mint + Cinnamon support? Would be useful. It is the same Ubuntu/Debian, but different GUI.

use better dd command

Tested on nexus 7, you can generate system image faster with this command:

busybox dd if=/dev/zero of=$IMG_TARGET bs=1048576 seek=$IMG_SIZE count=0

this will generate 2G image within one second.

su password

just trying your looks good. i can connect fine with vnc
what is su password ?

Also is it possible to change the screeen size/resolution?
800x 400 is way to small on the GUI

Essential to LinuxDeploy: Xvnc running with Xkb support?

Can you check if you Xvnc server is running with Xkb support?
Xkb support is essential for modern virtual keyboards like Onboard or Florence.
But both complain about
"X keyboard extension not available" or
"Unable to query XKB extension from X server".
(The a little bit old fashioned and not very good looking xvkbd has no problems with that)

In my opinion a virtual keyboard is the most important thing a Linus on Android should deploy. Most Linux-Apps and a lot of more Java apps are not able to work with the Android keyboard.

So without an own virtual keyboard Linux on Android is in more than 95% useless at all.
Without a virtual keyboard Linux on Android does not prove little more than that it is possible to install it on Android - but Linux on Android should be more than a technical
trick: It should solve problems Android does not even think that they exists.

And Linux should be available on millions of touchscreens to make millions of Java apps available on Android!

Kali linux supported?

In the repo docs you say that Kali linux is supported but on the current app on the Android market there is no Kali or Backtrack linux to select for the download.

SSH not started

I just noticed that sshd doesn't get started anymore. However, linuxdeploy claims it started it. In debug mode I cannot find any command that is supposed to start it, only the sed command setting the right port. Starting manually from the chroot works nicely, but I very much prefer it started autonatically upon startup. This used to work flawlessly ever since I started using linuxdeploy.

Can the installing process support Resume broken transfer

I mean, I found that in the newest version of Linux Deploy, if the network interrupted during the downloading of packages, all thing seemed to have to started from the beginning, making file system(ext2...).

Since the process is time-cosuming, can Linux Deploy support Resume broken transfer?

Mouse losed response in Debian&Ubuntu's VNC connection

I've tried Debian(squeeze&wheezy) and Ubuntu(quantal) provided by Linux Deploy, and I found an issue that after some mouse clicks the mouse pointer will not response any longer.

At the same time, the keyboard still works.
Sometimes after I closed the foreground window by using Alt+F4 or TAB key to navi to Close button, the mouse response would recovery.

An method to reproduce this issue:
Click on the desktop quickly for some times, and then the mouse will become no response.

In Fedora and ArchLinux, no such problem.
And on my another android phone, no problem even for Debian installation.

What does framebuffer mean in the newest version?

I updated to the newest version and found there is a new option in the deployment menu. I checked it and then started the Linux, and the screen became black and blank. Nothing, after 1 min, and pushed "back" hardkey.

I don't understant it very well, does it mean like the desktop environment on PC, and not need a VNC Viewer to use the system?

Thanks and best regards.

What's the difference among all the installation types?

Is there any performance difference among them?
And , If I use "Directory", does it mean that on the SD card there will be a directory that contains the "/" file system?
So far, I've just tried the image file approach.

Thanks and Best Regards.

Cannot run browsers in linux: shmget() failed

background info: device: google nexus, installation target: img 2G, installation went ok, distro linux precise, gui lxde, installed chromium and firefox from apt-get.

Problem: cannot start chromium or firefox: shmget() failed. I read somewhere that /dev/ashmem must be mounted (via bind) for the chroot environment, but could not figure out how to do that. I could not find out where the img file is mounted.

any hint what to try please?

No Issue - just a question: Virtual Keyboards

Does anybody know something about this:

Is it possible to use the android virtual keyboard in linux?
Which manager to use for that:
XTerm LXDE Xfce GNOME KDE ...?

If android keyboard is not available in chroot linux:
Is there a useable and modern linux virtual keyboard?

I tried xvkbd and matchbox-keyboard,
both are either not working or are very ugly and not really usable.

Background for this question:
I want to use a large touchscreen with a Java Swing jar app and an android mini pc stick.
Thanks to LinuxDeploy all is working so far only the virtual keyboard is not available.

Android 4.2 Support

I just got Jellybean 4.2 for my TF-101 and your deploy script still produces a viable loop image, but it's not apparently mounted from the terminal. Used to be I could chroot in from Android Terminal Emulator, but not anymore. Typing 'mount' shows the directory structure has changed, there's something called 0/emulated/legacy now instead of the old /storage/sdcard0, and though SSH server is running, it's now the only way into the deployed system.

I don't know any way to get ssh binaries into my android system, I was really fond of the chroot way in! Do you have access to any JB4.2 system you can use to see what's changed?

unable to bind to tcp-socket - Permission denied

Hi,

i'm trying to install LAMP and getting permission-denied errors if apache or mysql try to bind to tcp-socket:

130427 17:35:26 [ERROR] Failed to create a socket for IPv4 '127.0.0.1': errno: 13.
130427 17:35:26 [ERROR] Can't create IP socket: Permission denied

Any hints how to debug?

If I disable networking in mysql (only unix-sockets), then mysql is starting, but apache without networking is useless ;)

Version 1.3.5: Hint and wishes to the changed design

It is still possible to set new profiles,
if you find the hidden pathes to and from the profile settings.

I would wish the icon to the profiles would still exist
visible on the main screen and the system settings would have an own icon, too.

VNC could have a port setting like ssh.
and - the destination path could be created automatically if it does not exist.

Configure resolv.conf with android data

Currently Linux Deploy initializes /etc/resolv.conf of the linux system with Google public DNS IP (8.8.8,.8).

Unfortunately, this DNS server doesn't resolve intranet host names in the (corporate or home) wifi netfwork which device is connected to. So, I have to fix resolv.conf manually each time when I connect to my office or intranet. And of course, intranet DNS servers are not accessable from outside world, so when I use cellular network to access internet, I have to edit resolv.conf to use public DNS servers once again.

Android SDK provides a way to get DhcpInfo class from the Wifi system service, and this class provides addresses of the local DNS service from DHCP.

It would be nice, if LinuxDeploy would be able to initialize /etc/resolv.conf with local DNS servers at least if device is connected via wifi. Preferable - on each change of network state, so I can leave running apps when moving from office to home, but at least on each start of the system.

Can't install any distro.

Nexus 10 unlocked and rooted with stock ROM.
Followed your video but don't know what's wrong:

Ubuntu error: can't find "apt-get"
Fedora: can't find "yum"

Sometimes it's just "checking mount points... fail".

Don't know if it's I'm doing wrong or what. I've spent a few hours couldn't get any distro to even install.

Only once openSUSE started to install for quite a while and in the end I found it didn't support GUI.

install fail when giving image size 8191..

Hello,

I have a strange problem.
I made an image install of Debian with auto calculation (give 4095 for the size).
its was working well.
After that I made an other install with a giving size of 8191 and the install worked.
I try again with a new config (change for lxde) and the install fail.
I try many time ( also with initial config who worked first time) and its fail each time.

Of course I have 16G SD card and I also format it to test if the problem could come from a SD card problem.

Well, I really don't understand what's happen.. do you have an id??
(I will complete this post with log file and screen capture).

Best Regards.

Manu from France.

I complete information with debug information active:
linux_deploy_fail1

so why the file is "too large" ?? could it be an SD pb??
Well, I am under android 2.3.4 ...I will test under version 4

ext4 (external sdcard) installation failed

I have a Samsung 32GB Ultra microsd card
My device is Galaxy Note 10.1 (n8010)

I formatted the sdcard into 2 partitions, 1: ext4 and 2: fat32

when i set the path in linux deploy, " /dev/block/mmcblk1p1 " (ext4 partition) and update env and press install,

and after env is updated i get this as output :

Updating Config... file ... done

begin install
Checking mount points .... done
making file system (ext4) ... fail

anything that i'm doing wrong ?

then i changed the path to : " /dev/block/vold/179:49 "instead of mmcblk1p1 path
The env updated then it said

making file sys ext 4 .. done
but after that it returned with this :

/..... fail

Is there anything i can do ? can you please help me solve this issue ?

Thanks

LXTerminal can't start to prompt after "sudo yum update" in fedora 17

After "sudo yum update" in fedora 17, and then launch LXTerminal, the prompt will not be shown. If install a gnome-terminal and run, "creating the child process for this terminal: grantpt failed: permission denied" will be shown.

How to solve it?
I refered to http://www.ep.ph.bham.ac.uk/general/support/f15custom.html,
there is a section of "Problem in devpts with opening Terminal, konsole, and gnome-terminal sessions".

I tried to edit the /etc/fstab, and add such line:
none /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0

and then in PuTTY, I ran the command :
mount -o remount /dev/pts

and ran mount, the mode is 620, and fid=5 now.

And back to VNC viewer, the LXTerminal can lauch ok.

Only Black Screen when using Framebuffer for Display

I'm having trouble getting the framebuffer option to work. My phone only displays a black screen and my tablet usually does the same (usually the menu bar at the bottom goes away and then comes back), although it occasionally displays the desktop and then freezes and turns black after switching apps. Where tablet's menu bar is (with back, home, etc buttons), the image is distorted. The back and home buttons can still be pressed through the screen (the framebuffer mode uses the whole screen and covers them). Both devices I used clean installs of Ubuntu quantal with armhf and installed xserver-xorg-input-mtrack. xinit xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-video-fbdev xserver-xorg-input-evdev are all installed. Frame Buffer settings are Display 2, Video device /dev/graphics/fb0, Input device /dev/input/event2.

With debugging messages enabled in Linux Deploy, after <<< end: start, it displays some of the Xorg.2.log and after the "Initializing built-in extension..." messages, the last thing it says is "Loading extension GLX".

I tried Ubuntu precise, armhf and Ubuntu quantal, armel on my tablet as well.

Also, it skips the Frame Buffer part (Frame Buffer... skip) if VNC is enabled, even if Frame Buffer is checked in the Properties menu.

Here's the /var/log/Xorg.2.log from each device:

Just a question: Copy/Paste with VNC

I am using TightVNC from Win7 to customize the DeployLinux.
To install software apt-get, to copy settings etc it would be very handy to use copy/paste from to the DeployLinux.
Does anybody know how to achive this?

Is there a a setting in the VNCserver in DeployLinux?
Or a setting in the used Linux-Desktop?
Or a switch in TightVNC on Win7?

Virtual Keyboard, 2nd: Suggestion of a feature - making LinuxDeploy even better

I am using LinuxDeploy for some weeks now: Great work - great features and running like a charm! The best I found for chrooted linux on android.

For a million of linux and more java apps (with swing/awt) running in linux there is no virtual keyboard available in the standard linux distributions.

In the last weeks I tried to install and test a lot of of different virtual keyboards, but the most of them are not very usable or userfriendly indeed. Of course the android keyboard is available when using vnc but this android keyboard is neither able to change its place nor its size on the desktop.
And lots of the fullscreen linux apps do not want the android menu on the bottom either.

But this sizeability and moving features are a must for existing linux and java apps:
Their layouts are not and will not be optimized for android desktop, or they are java and will stay java. In fact there will be no adjustments of the code to the nice little incompatible javavm of darwik.
So all of these linux and java apps do really need a virtual keyboard which is able to be resized and which is able to be moved around the desktop.

There are two highly recommended apps for this: Onboard and Florence.

I tested the Onboard keyboard, and its perfect: Easy to adjust the layout and the design and it is made with python. But I only got Onboard to work with ubuntu and its desktop unity. In this it is done in some seconds.
But with other desktops like lxde or in debian instead of ubuntu it is very complicated to install Onboard. In fact I tried for some weeks now and I did not succeed. The closest I got into a running Onboard keyboard where some grey rectangles in the vnc screen:
The invisible buttons would work but invisible buttons are not really better than the impossible android keyboard ;-))

So I suggest my feature request:
How about installing Onboard by default?

It is really a must-have for all linuxes running chrooted in android:
As I said - most linux apps are not usable with the android keyboard, in most cases the layout of the input fields are not made for the android keyboard - you simply cannot fill in a input field which is behind and under the keyboard!

Even when you make the virtual keyboard a feature to pay for - LinuxDeploy would be by far the most outstanding app in this field!!
Add this feature to your adds and your downloads will raise.

How to enlarge the buffer/cache size?

I'm not very sure about the recommended hardware if I use Linux Deploy as a mobile workstation to handle my regular work. I found memory size limit of mobile phone might be a problem. I'm using a phone which has 380MB RAM, and I assigned a 2GB image for the installation. I put mail data on /mnt/sdcard.

Would you like to give me some suggestion about how to make Linux Deploy more pratical?
Thanks.

Internet is working only when using sudo

Hi,
I have a little problem with the Internet on debian and ubuntu. It is not working if I'm not using sudo.
I've seen that the user android it is already in the group aid_inet, i've also tried to make another user but I get the same result.
If I use ping www.google.com it receive unknown host www.google.com
If I use sudo ping www.google.com it receives the packets from google.
Also in LXDE, I've installed Iceweasel and if I run it without sudo the internet is not working.
Do you have any idea of what went wrong?

debian wheezy; black screen and no sh from ssh or lxterminal

Hi

The install process is great indeed.

I experience the same black screen as other people, even when selecting xterm session

Most annoyingly, when logging from ssh, or when starting an terminal, there is no way to interact, as if there was no sh started, or as if it was missing

Thanks for your help

How about adding an icon in notification bar?

Show an icon in it, and the user will keep in mind that he should stop and exit before rebooting or powering off the phone.

BTW, if I power off the phone by leaving a running Linux(not stopped), is it possible to destroy my deployed Linux system, such as the file system, and etc.?

Best regards.
