linux-setup's Introduction

klaxalk's Linux environment

20.04 Docker AMD64 [![Build Focal
20.04 AMD64 Docker

Summary

This repo contains settings of klaxalk's Linux work environment.

It could be summarized as follows:

  • Ubuntu 20.04
  • i3 (i3gaps) tiling window manager with i3bar and vim-like controls
    • i3-layout-manager for saving and loading window layouts
  • urxvt terminal emulator with ability to show images (when using the ranger file manager)
  • tmux terminal multiplexer is running all the time
    • tmuxinator for automation of tmux session
    • vim-compatible key bindings for split switching
  • vim is everywhere
    • pluginized for smooth c++ and ROS development
    • youcompleteme
    • UltiSnips
    • shared clipboards between vim, tmux and OS
    • Ctrl+P
    • smooth latex development with vimtex and zathura
    • Tim Pope is the king
  • athame gives you vim in the terminal (zsh)
    • handfull of plugins in terminal: ultisnips, vim-surround, targets.vim, vim-exchange, etc.
  • zsh better shell for everyday use
  • ranger terminal file manager
  • profile_manager and epigen for switching between machine-specific configurations (profiles within dotfiles)
    • all-in-one configuration, no git branching, no more cherrypicking
    • sharing configs between multiple users
    • sharing configs between different machines
    • seamless switching of colorschemes

To clone and install everything run following code. BEWARE, running this will DELETE your current .i3, tmux, vim, etc. dotfiles.

cd /tmp
echo "mkdir -p ~/git
cd ~/git
sudo apt-get -y install git
git clone https://github.com/klaxalk/linux-setup.git
cd linux-setup
./install.sh" > run.sh && source run.sh

Calling install.sh repeatedly will not cause acumulation of code in your .bashrc, so feel free to update your configuration by rerunning it.

Troubleshooting

It is possible and probable that after you update using git pull, something might not work anymore. This usually happens due to new programs, plugins, and dependencies that might not be satisfied anymore. I suggest re-running install.sh, after each update.

linux-setup's Issues

EPIGEN

while updating my install due to latest pull , EPIGEN parameters were re-written in my bash file

Absolute path to submodule

in dotbashrc the line with path ~/git/linux-setup/submodules/tmuxinator/completion/tmuxinator should be relative.

Typo in README.md

When copypasting commands from the readme the second line has an extra
echo "
which may confuse someone as the terminal will expect end of the quotes...

Keyboard remapping using `setxkbmap` not working for external keyboards

When you connect an external keyboard after the .i3/config file was already processed, the keyboard remappings using setxkbmap (mapping Esc to CapsLock, switching keyboard locale) are not applied to it. This can be fixed by rerunning the remapping commands manually.

Possible fix:

Using udev rules to detect when a new keyboard is plugged in and run a script to reapply the remappings (see https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/28548/how-to-run-custom-scripts-upon-usb-device-plug-in).

Forcibly setting $DISPLAY to :0

On

DISPLAY=:0 && xset r rate 350 55 2> /dev/null

the commons.sh is setting the $DISPLAY variable to :0, in order to fix the keyboard repeat rate.
This is problematic, since it breaks ssh X11 Forwarding - when you do e.g. ssh -X user@host, the sshd on host sets $DISPLAY to the appropriate value corresponding to the remote display assigned to the remote session, e.g. localhost:10.0.
Sourcing commons.sh in my .bashrc / .zshrc sets it back to :0, so if I don't manually set it back I can't display remote graphical interfaces.
Instead of manually setting the variable, I would recommend to instead check if $DISPLAY is set before doing xset r rate ....

Power button

Pushing the power button, which for asus zenbooks is right next to the delete button so it can easily get pressed accidentally, instantly shuts down the computer without any warning.
Nice solution would be to offer shudown/restart/suspend menu instead and shutdown only after long press.

The default global clipboard sometimes stops working in Vim

Symptoms: Copy some text e.g. in Firefox. Go to Vim or Athame shell in Normal mode, press p - a random thing gets pasted (not the one which was copied). Using the Vim sequence "+p or `"*p" gets the desired result (pasting the copied text). This seems to affect all Vim instances - old and new - after some time of normal working.

Expected behavior: The global clipboard should be used by default in linux-setup Vim all the time.

Ways to reproduce: Unknown.

installation gets stuck when installing zshell

When running ./install.sh the installation gets stuck when installing zshell.
stuck_at_install_zshell
When I enter "n" instead of default "y" all the rest of the installation succeeds.
Any solutions to this?
Thanks!

Install fails on arm64 due to intel driver

It would be nice to have linux-setup environment available even on arm64 platforms and I believe it requires only slight modifications.

The package xserver-xorg-video-intel that contains drivers for intel chipsets (https://packages.debian.org/sid/xserver-xorg-video-intel) is installed by default. The package is not available for arm64 platform and thus the install script fails. The driver does not have to be installed for arm64.

sudo apt -y install ruby sl indicator-multiload figlet toilet gem tree exuberant-ctags xclip xsel xserver-xorg-video-intel exfat-fuse exfat-utils xserver-xorg-input-synaptics blueman autossh jq xvfb gparted espeak xserver-xorg-input-all

VIM visual invisible

In VIM, the setup makes current selection in visual mode invisible; Selection works, which can be verified with yank, but it is not highlighted.

VIM mode incomplete

In the VIM mode, "inner" modifier does not work;
Steps to reproduce:

  • F2 for VIM mode;
  • move to the middle of a word;
  • press: viw
    - expected behaviour: whole word is selected;
    - actual behaviour: selection from cursor position to the first letter of the next word (included)

Athame crashing from time to time

Title is self-explanatory...
This was observed in relation to using the arrow keys extensively, but it may be unrelated.

Possible solution: rollback to a more stable version?
