@adonath did write the population model distributions as Astropy models (see here).
For the source models (see here) and the PSF models (see here) this is currently not possible, because we use quantities which aren't supported by models.
Even if models did support quantities, it's far from clear that sub-classing Astropy model would be useful ... so I'm closing this issue for now.
We can still do a Gammapy API review next year when it's more clear where Astropy and Gammapy are.
