I have had a bit more experiences to report on this issue. First, it did not happen with the stock firmware and only began to happen after a flash with a nightly build a few weeks ago
In the last nightly build the problem manifests itself a bit differently, the transmitter still functions however the menus are corrupted and the drive is reported as damaged when it is connected to a windows 10 computer. Windows 10 can not scan and repair the drive and the only option is to format it and recopy the files to it.
On the previous nightly build version the transmitter would not boot, but windows 10 could "repair" the drive and the problems seemed fixed for a period of time.
It is unclear to me what is triggering the corruption.

It appears I had a defective unit! Please do not waste any time on this non-issue. I returned the first unit to the vendor and the second unit displays no apparent file corruption issues.
