the repo behind the repos

Please create a Github Issue on this repository for anything related to BeerJS: new chapter requests, existing chapter updates, etc.

We use github (this website!) to discuss things. If you're not used to that, here's a quick video intro.

Also, you can chat with us on slack!

Have a beerjs in your city

Anyone can do it- why not you? Please open an issue on this repo and clearly state:

  • the github usernames of everyone who should be an admin on the repo. we find that having at least 2 is best, but if it's just you, that's fine for now.
  • the name of the repo. this becomes the url slug, eg beerjs/foo. if your city has a short name, like an airport code, that's fine. whatever you like that's still recognizable as your city.
  • bonus: gifs or emoji are always welcome
  • we will try to get you setup within in a couple of days. Sometimes it may take a little longer as this is us giving time to the JS community. Please have a little patience if things do not happen as fast as you want. It's totally ok to ask for an update in the comments or contact Jordan on Slack :)

Once you have a repo created, encourage people in your town to "watch" the repo to subscribe to notifications for issues on github. Issues are a great way to propose, plan, and remind people of upcoming events. Filling out a readme, description, and optional URL to your repo will help people know what's going on and want to come to your cool event. Feel free to borrow text and formatting from other beer.js repos.

We have a slack team now! Join it here. Each city is encouraged to create their own channel.

get help organizing

A great way is to open an issue, or browse through some of the repos from other cities to see what they're up to.

code of conduct

All events, activities, and internet spaces which bear the beer.js name are subject to the Citizen Code of Conduct. Simply stated, harassment of any form will not be tolerated and should be reported to your local organizer or to @jordanpapaleo. Please drink responsibly and act in a way that honors the community values of respect and mutual enrichment which we share.

a note about beer

BeerJS is about creating social spaces to strengthen software communities. There is no requirement to drink to participate.

tools to help you

Starting a JS community is not always easy. Here are some tools to help you plan you events.

Feel free to create a pull request if you have useful resources for our group.

why organize on Github?

See this thread from a local chapter: beerjs/abq#6

rules on donations (gentle suggestions)

BeerJS is not an organization that generates any sort of income. Its not a non profit either. This makes funding events a little more tricky. In no way does having a chapter mean that you need to fund everything out of your pocket. It is encouraged to find partners to work with you in growing our community. Partners can be locations for your events, beer vendors, Sticker Mule, local companies, etc.

Do this

The Tahoe branch met at a cowork location for free and a local micro brewery would donate beer every month to support our efforts. None of those groups ever asked for something in return. They were supporters of building commmunity.

Not this (totally made this up)

A company has agreed to provide beer if it has access to the email addresses for the members of your community. A recruiter has offered to buy pizza if you let them use a meetup as a recruitment platform.

Take away

  • Recruiters are part of our community. Its ok if they want buy pizza or something to support the community because people are looking for jobs. They can mingle and network just like the rest of us.
  • Companies that want to give you a place to meet are wonderful because we need places to meet.
  • Groups that print stickers probono are awesome because we all love stickers.
  • ANYONE who offers something in exchange for something has alterior motives and needs to be avoided. Do not owe anyone anything.

stickers

Honestly, who doesn't love a good sticker? Do you run your local BeerJS events? Sticker Mule would like to support you, your efforts, and help our community grow. You can request sponsorship here.

If you just want to buy a couple of stickers: BeerJS Sticker

Huge thank you to:

many thanks to the people that started beerjs.

To the extent that anyone "runs" beerjs, it's these guys:

meta's Issues

beerjs Berlin

I (@kode4food) can organize it initially, but I will eventually want to pull someone in for help.

beerjs/berlin

SAC

I'm going to take a stab at trying to create a Beer.js in Sacramento.

  • I will be the organizer
  • The repo name should be sac
  • I generally fail at GIFs, so... 🍻 🍺 🍻 :shipit:

Cheers!

Set up a beerjs/sd?

Occasionally we forgo the normal meetup (like upcoming in Nov) for a beer and chat night, it would be nice to distribute the info through here too.

BeerJS/Chicago

I'd like to get a beerjs/Chicago chapter going!! Thanks

Rename or new repo for jc

I requested a new beerjs repo for Jersey City yesterday and it was promptly created. However, I wasn't thinking broad enough and only later realized that the group is better named "hudson" which is the name of the county which covers several closely neighboring cities.

Please create the new repo and we can deprecate jc.

Sorry about that. Thanks for you help.

BeerJS NYC?

very surprising that there isn't an NYC chapter... I'm not the most managerial of people, but I am one for providing updates and conversation. I would not be opposed to pairing with someone as ownership, or in the interim, solely handling that. But like I said, not the most managerial of people :)

would vote for beerjs/nyc

  • Admins: Just me for now. Planning on it being in my living room for the time being (not a lot of beer drinkers in this neck of the woods)
  • beerjs/orem
  • hacking NCIS

BeerJS São José dos Campos

Hello.

I would like to create a repository for the city of São José dos Campos / SP Brazil. The city's name is huge, so beerjs/sjc seems excellent. At the moment only I will be involved in the project, but have already sent invitations to some friends and am awaiting their response =)

Summary -> github username: @danilovaz / repo name: beerjs/sjc

Let's drink and code 🍻

BeerJS in SP

Hello Everybody!

I would like fork beerjs in my city! São Paulo in Brazil!

What is the next steps?

Austin, Tx beerjs

I would love to see a beerjs in Austin. I am currently the only one I know to be an admin.

username of admin: mtrussell

name of repo: beerjs/atx

Sorry, no gifs...

Thanks for putting this together. I'm looking forward to organizing an event!

BeerJS Panama City!

Hello folks! I want to start a beer.js in Panama city because the js community here is growing, and the folks here wants some beers and js!

The repo name should be beerjs/pty

thanks!

International Day?

NodeBots and NodeSchool have one, why not make an international Beer.js day?

  • Set a date October 1, 2015
  • How will it be different from regular Beer.js meetups?
  • Guidelines?

Add ABQ project for beerjs

The Duke City has JS types that like beer. I'm going to get them together and would love to have an "abq" project for coordinating.

Would it be possible to create beerjs/jaen?

Hi!
I'm Victor Rivas, from the University of Jaen, in the south of Spain.
It would be great if we could create beerjs/jaen, so, please, consider it.
At this moment, I would be the only admin, but I'm sure we'll be able to add one or two more people in the next weeks.
Thanks.
And beers.

BeerJS South New Jersey (SNJ)

Hey looking to start a group for those of us who don't want to cross a bridge to Philadelphia for meetups. I've got 3-4 devs interested in participating in more of an organizational role so I think we can get this going.

Create a BeerJS Slack

From bpod/beerjs-chicago#1 (comment)

It looks like beerjs.slack.com is taken - do we know anything about it? If there's already one, it would be good to converge there. If not, I'm happy to make one with another team subdomain. /cc @beerjs/owners

From the above-referenced issue:

have channels for each city and also meta channels for general discussion and issues

This sounds like a good plan to me.

BeerJS Rawalpindi

Hey guys. I was wondering if I could get access to add our own repo here with the name rwp. Thanks! 👀

beer.js - Sorocaba, Brazil

We would like to spread the word in Brazil! We are currently studying CS at Federal University of São Carlos and would love to allocate a time in our yearly event for beer.js!

Admins: @brenolf and @mccraveiro

Name: beerjs/sorocaba

Gifs/Emojis: We have no gifs/emojis to share yet :-(

beerjs/cordoba

I want to organise a Beer.js in Córdoba, Argentina.
Is it possible to setup a repo for our group?
Thanks 🍻

Beer.js in Sofia

Hey,

We want to create a Beer.js meetups in Sofia, Bulgaria.

We already have SofiaJS user group at sofiajs.org but it'll be awesome if we can combine code and beer together!

Please Add beerjs/tahoe

We are opening up our meetup to the community and moving outside the walls of Clear Capital. BeerJS Truckee is a time to get together, throw a few back, and learn collectively about JavaScript. We value good beer and good code and encourage the sharing of both.

Topics so far have been around AngularJS and the MEAN stack, but in reality the scope is pretty open. The meetup will usually follow a beer socialization/forum format. Anyone can present for any amount of time. You can show something you built, talk about something you would like to build, challenge "best" practices, or change the world; your call. Please let me know if you are interested so we don't double up.

We meet on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at The Lift co-working space in Truckee, CA. It's on the second floor of the Airport Office Centre on the left. Huge thanks to The Lift for giving us a home in community.

Problem about the name

Some of Paris members shows a main problem.

Some people don't frink alcohol, some of us are women, some of us are vegetarian, some of us are religious. All of them like us as to have the respect of each other.
BeerJS is a name, just a name, but implies the "usage" of alcohol, that don't correspond to a part of us.

The goal of this meetup is to be a great cool community to met other people from differents tech meetups. Even if there is alcohol or not.

We should find another name, for groups which wants it, which don't refers to alcohol. Which don't naturally excludes people.

Sorry for my english

Boise beer.js Chapter

I'd like to start a chapter of beer.js here at Boise. What do I need to get started?

Looking for organizer: Beer.js Amsterdam

I'll be permanently moving to Australia soon, and I was wondering if anyone is interested in taking over Beer.js Amsterdam.

There's been one get-together so far, and the people that attended were absolutely lovely. Since then about 100 more people have joined the group, and with international beer.js day being planned it would be ideal to host another event. Let me know if you, or anyone you know would like to organize future Beer.js Amsterdam events. Cheers! 🍻

BeerJS Amsterdam!

We don't have one here, and I'd very much like to get the ball rolling.

admin for beerjs/boise

Can I be added as admin for Boise? Looks like there's nothing going on with the group and I want to try and get it going.
j

Sticker buy?

Are any organizers interested in doing a group buy of BeerJS stickers? I don't have enough folks in Albuquerque interested to make a BeerJS ABQ sticker worthwhile, but folks would like generic ones.

logo / props repo

It would be nice to have a seperate logo / assets repo which organizers can use to create props. :D

new organizers' group

@beerjs/organizers: I have created a @beerjs/organizers group containing (wait for it...) all of the 🍺js organizers. This will make it easier for us to communicate cross-city, now that there are 36 of us spanning 17 cities around the world.

Here's also a friendly reminder that you can always look across at other cities to get organizing hints, steal readme text, and make friends. If you know of someone in a new city who wants to start a beerjs, have them open an issue in https://github.com/beerjs/meta/issues - and for that matter, if you ever have an organizing question or proposal, feel free to open an issue of your own :)

Cheers 🍻

BeerJS Palo Alto

I've taken over stewardship of BeerJS Palo Alto's meetup and organized a successful July meetup, and already scheduled a meetup for August.

Unfortunately, I can't update folks who are watching the GitHub repo.

Can I be added to the team for https://github.com/beerjs/paloalto ?

BeerJS Buenos Aires

Hey guys. I haven't really talked with any of you about this, but I did speak about it with @maxogden and @mikeal, although they're not exactly related to BeerJS (to my knowledge). I'm one of the organizers for NodeSchool / NodeBots in Buenos Aires, and we'd love to branch out. One of those branches would be BeerJS.

I was wondering if I could get access to add our own BA repo here. Thanks! love(beer && js)

Beerjs Jersey City

Just created the Jersey City (New Jersey) JavaScript meetup and would like to have a monthly Beerjs meetup.

*github usernames: cjus
*name of repo: beerjs/jc

Beer.js stickers

We've got a beer.js coming up in July at one of our local breweries in Norfolk and I wanted to try to distribute beer.js stickers. Does anyone have a stockpile of stickers they'd be willing to share? We can arrange a trade with some local user group stickers (the @norfolkjs ninja cat is pretty awesome).

BeerJS Paris

Hi,

I'm one of the organizers of BeerJS in Paris, France. Is it possible to setup a repo for our group ? I will probably make a page to communicate about our local beerjs.

We have a well organized association for all JavaScript in Paris (ParisJS), and dedicated for some frameworks : ngParis, EmberParis, NodeParis.

Thanks in advance guys, it's a great project !

beerjs / saltlakecity

I'm conflicted on how I feel about being the first to represent Utah -- but here I am requesting the repo with myself (no others) as admin. Thanks! Let me know if there's any other information you'll be needing.

Why is there no beerjs/pdx?

Portland is a very beer-friendly city, with an active JavaScript community. In years past, it has been home to JSConf, NodeConf, and has an active NodePDX local conference. There is an active PDXNode meetup, and Portlanders make up some of the most active contributors in the JavaScript and node communities. So, why is there no beerjs/pdx group? Let me know and I will make the repo (and join you in Bridgetown for a beer)
