The issue here is probably requestAnimationFrame, which Kinetic is likely using for a rendering loop. The browser doesn't paint if the tab is not visible.

The solution is to decouple our rendering code we hand to Kenetic from the logic code.

Yep, but doing that the console and the board could be out of sync or the code for the board could be complex to handle the game state. This is one thing we have to decide: keep things in sync, blocking the game because the board or decouple and may have sync issues.
