heyguys.cc's Issues

Comrades alternative duality

Hey eveyrone.

I like this project a lot. I'd suggest to remove one alternative from it, which some people mind find quite offensive and that it comrade.

Imagine you're from a country that was occupied by Russia for 40+ years and people were forced to use the word comrade when talking to each other. It does not have a good connotation in Central Europe.

Cheers.

Remove language that could be considered culturally appropriated

Hi folks! Love this initiative!

I recently heard that using "y'all" is a form of culturally appropriated language. I grew up in the US south and haven't considered this before, but it could be worth visiting. The other one that might cross this barrier is "peeps."

Keep up the good work!

Adding other inclusive language issues?

This might be an undesirable increase in scope for this site, but I wonder if you'd be interested in expanding it to address more inclusive language topics.

The one foremost in my mind is that describing things as "crazy" or "insane" may be offensive to people who struggle with mental health issues.

If you're open to adding this, I would be happy to propose some design and code to do so.

Non-welcoming language on heyguys.cc

Unfortunately I have made the experience that the text on heyguys.cc uses non-welcoming language. Starting off with '"Hey guys" is a common salutation, but it's not gender neutral.' is non-welcoming because it is factually incomplete. The statement can lead to controversy when the site is linked to because people for whom "hey guys" is a non-gendered salutation can feel excluded and not welcome, and they may not be very receptive for the rest of the text.

I think it would be better to promote non-gendered language with a more welcoming text, something like

"Hey guys" is a common salutation, but it's not gender neutral for everybody. While it is non-gendered to some, people who aren't men can feel excluded when addressed as "guys".

I would also remove the part "even if that is not the intent". Miscommunication needs two parties, and it is caused by the speaker and the listener having a different understanding of "guys". The current intent statement blames only the speaker for the miscommunication, I tried to make my example above blameless instead, but I'm sure it's not perfect either.

I think with a few minor changes the text could be more welcoming and more people would react positively to it.

Additional items to main list?

I was wondering if we have plans to add more to list of alternatives on main page. If so we could add more with an option to 'show more' to expand the list. Not entirely sure though if thats the intension of the site(to show more ways). Feel free to close this immediately if that doesn't make sense.

I thought this repo was a great idea(yet very simple). i was showing this to my friends at workplace the other day, and they suggested other ways not mentioned in the main list, so thought i'd open this issue.
