This could be achieved using a clustering algorithm. Similar to how locations on maps get clustered at lower zoom levels.

Thanks for the feedback. I found I could get round this by changing the values of
maxYearIntervalWidth,
maxDecadeIntervalWidth,
maxCenturyIntervalWidth
increasing each by a factor of 10-20 allows much greater zoom levels. Also changing currentZoomLevel from 0 to 1.
Having the timeline ruler display individual months and days as you zoom in would also be a useful enhancement.
