vscode-processes's Introduction

VS Code Processes

The VS Code Processes extensions shows all child processes of VS Code in a custom view in the VS Code Explorer.

Mock Debug

From the context menu of a process node you can terminate the process or attach a debugger to it.

Installing VS Code Processes

This extension is still a prototype and so it is not yet available on the Marketplace but you can easily build the vsix with these commands:

  git clone https://github.com/weinand/vscode-processes
  cd vscode-processes
  npm install
  npm run package

Then use VS Code's Install from VSIX... command to install the extension.

Using VS Code Processes

By default the Process View is not shown. To open it use the "Show Process View" command.

The context menu of a process node in the tree supports these actions:

  • Kill: tries to kill the process by sending a SIGTERM signal.
  • Force Kill: forcefully kills the process by sending a SIGKILL signal.
  • Start Node Debugging: this action is only available if the process is identified as a node.js process that supports debugging. The heuristics uses the command line arguments of the process: if a --inspect, --inspect-brk, --debug, or --debug-brk flag is found (with or without port number), a debug session is started against a debug port. If none of the flags are found but the process executable is node a debug session is started via the process ID and the SIGUSR1 mechanism.

More actions are planned in the future.

vscode-processes's Issues

Publish into VS Code Extension Marketplace

Hi @weinand, first of all, I would like to thank you for this amazing Extension. I'm mind blown here how awesome this is.

I was just wondering if you have plans to publish into the Marketplace, as I had to set up for some junior developers here and would be easier just install from VsCode Marketplace.

Many Thanks

Linux: `ps` might not be located in `/bin`

I'm submitting this request here, because I think this is the most appropriate place. Feel free to point me somewhere else.

From within VSCode, if I want to attach to an existing process, I use the setting "processId": "${command:PickProcess}", in my launch.json. This fails with the error:

Process picker failed (spawn /bin/ps ENOENT)

Currently the location of ps is hardcoded to /bin

proc = spawn('/bin/ps', [ '-ax', '-o', 'pid=,ppid=,pcpu=,pmem=,command=' ]);

Although this is indeed a logical default value, this does not work on my system. A more portable version would be to use /usr/bin/env ps, which grabs the first ps binary that's on the path. Another option would be to have some sort of setting, but I'm not sure what that would look like.

I'm not sure how to development on VSCode and how I can implement/test this correctly, but I guess the fix is fairly straightforward.
