alternative-fuel-vehicles-usa's Issues

To be edit (for Visualization)

To be edti:

  • play button (although auto play is not enabled, it looks like it is)
  • Typo on the first page of tutorial
  • instruction that helps people aware of clickable labels
  • Colors of labels are inconsistent by state (AF types)
some state’s other fuels is red, while others are light green
  • Text in the text box of some states at the edge is hard to see.

usability test tasks

Let's work on writing up 3-4 tasks to use as our usability test. I'll start a doc in the shared folder. Please contribute ideas!

Carbon emissions dataset

This is the discussion thread for the carbon emissions dataset. I will keep posting updates on this thread if I make any changes to the dataset.

Play button

Although auto play is not enabled, it looks like it is enabled.
In the first screen, auto play icon should be 'play icon'

Prototype Map Feedback - Occlusion

I've got a bit of feedback in a similar fashion to Laurel's before. None is crucial, but just minor improvements.

Overview map, the hover-text appears a bit too quickly and it obscures a large amount of each state. Is there a way to create a slight delay that it's not constantly appearing even if one isn't trying to hover over it?

Overview map: can we get the hover-text to be a layer above the top Carbon Emission drop-down menu? Currently it's impossible to read South Dakota's info, for instance because it is occluded.

Alternative Fuel Types tab: the second graph looks really cool! Is there a way to get the expanded titles of each fuel to appear when hovering over the names? I fear people might not know what each acronym is inherently, even though there are of course clues above and below.

AF Vehicles: I just love that first area graph clickability...

data sets sources

Hi Sid,
Where did you get the total vehicles data and the carbon emissions data?
Thanks!
Laurel

Issue regarding Visualization

I am somewhat concerned that the year in the map and the year in the bar are not matching when animation is done. I think it would be okay to start animation manually, since change by year is subtle.

Inconsistent color of labels

Colors of labels are inconsistent by state (AF types) some state’s other fuels is red, while others are light green

tutorial popups?

Hi, it looks like the tutorial popups aren't loading right now?

My internet here is a bit weird so it might just be that...

popup for graph 3 on tab 3

The popup for the bottom graph on tab #3 hovers in the wrong place, over the middle graph- makes it hard to read

graph idea

Here's an idea for a graph, it has year along the X-axis and the % of AEVs to the total population (this would be better as % of all vehicles if we can do that)
Then each state is represented by a line. I color coded these so that each region of the U.S. has a color. (Pacific states, west, southwest, midwest, mid-atlantic, northeast, south) Then if you select a state on the map, it would be cool if it could brush it so that that line was highlighted (or all the other ones were made much dimmer). That way, the user could see where the selected state fits in with the others and if it is following the trend.

alternative fuels types graphs

on tab #3, the fuel types should use the same colors for the legend across all of the graphs. This is pretty important because it really improves readability.

graph not linking properly

On tab #2 (AF vehicles), the bottom graph (weight class) the title shows that the graph is linked to state selection from the map, but the data doesn't change when different states are selected.

I recommend removing the state designation in the map title, and then it will be fine.

AVG Cost by Make (unfiltered) #ConsumerInteresting

Here's 131 of the top makes (models are averaged out, and obviously some makes have more models that are made) with the ascending order of money saved over 5 years of use compared to a regular gasoline car. "you save/spend over 5 years compared to an average car ($). Savings are positive; a greater amount spent yields a negative number. For dual fuel vehicles, this is the cost savings for gasoline."

prototype feedback

Hey Sid,
Just a few ideas for the project:

  1. Change the color for carbon emissions to be red, and total vehicles to be red, but make AEV green and the ratio between AEV and total to be maybe blue? This way the colors give connotative meaning (green = good, red = bad)
  2. Could we add a filter option to the US map or any of the other graphs? I'm thinking specifically to make an option to choose between all vehicle types (autos, trucks, busses, etc) and automobiles-only.
    Thanks!

Intro text

Can someone give the intro text for our application.

Title and description for each step.

Please let me know if any question.

Can we download the survey results?

Ivan,
is there a way to download the survey questions and/or questions and results in a concise format? I'd like to include the questions as an appendix in the paper. If not, I'll just re-type them out. Thanks!

missing the google docs version of the presentation

Hi, I can't find the presentation file in our shared drive. Does anyone know where it went?
Sid, could you upload a .pdf version of our actual presentation (so I can some content for the paper)?
Thanks!

total vehicles spreadsheet

I uploaded a collated spreadsheet of the total vehicles in the US by year and state to the "Usable datasets" folder. There are 2 sheets: automobiles only, and all (includes trucks, motorcycles, etc..)
It won't work in Tableau but it should work for D3. Thanks!

11/23 meeting notes

  1. make the heavy/medium/light duty legend more obvious that they are selectable
a.checkboxes? have default state with one deselected?
  2. Remove “stream” option for “Number of AFVs based on vehicle types”
  3. Fix title for this graph: should be AFVs not AFV’s
    a. rename “stacked” to “Total number” and “expanded” to “Percent of total”
  4. the “Alternative Fuels Types” tab will have the box and whisker plot, and a line graph of total fuels used over the year range
  5. the “AFV Manufacturers” tab will have the filterable dot plot
  6. we should work on figuring out a unique plot type
  7. can we find a data set that shows the total number of all models of AFVs in use for a particular year, to make a nice scatter plot?
  8. We will use the term “Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFV)” across the viz. and paper
  9. We should focus on the presentation for the next week and a half
  10. We will meet at 3:30 on Wed. Dec. 3, Sangeun will send out a meeting invite and reserve a room in a library

updated "AFV_User_Fuel_All_Data_Final" file

Hi all,
I uploaded a new version of the data file above to the folder in our shared drive- I changed the year to be recognizable as such by tableau. Also, i noticed that there is no data for 2003 (there are rows for it but all quant. values are 0). So I'm not totally sure what to do about that...

2003 missing data

For the missing data points in 2003 (for # of vehicles by state by fuel type) we should just average the 2002 and 2004 values. I'll do this and update the spreadsheet.

work on ideas for plots

To help Sid, let's work on ideas for plots for the in-depth tabs:
-Alternative fuel vehicles
-Alternative fuel types
-AEV manufacturers

Send him tableau workbooks or instructions if you think of something good!
