I'm discussing the issue of the SMIL to CSS conversion in the SVGWG forum, and Brian Birtles, implementer of SMIL in Firefox and Web Animations / Animation Elements spec editor, told me that exists a way to solve all the limitations you listed as "most common" in the wiki.
