Daydream by Marvin Cespedes on 05/24/2017

Daydream

Dissecting the path it took to establish what I wanted to do for a living and how I got there. This is both a talk about achieving a goal and tempering those expectations A LOT.

Career Iteration: A Design Celebration by Chris Wilkinson on 06/21/2017

Career Iteration: A Design Celebration

"Assumptions: Design is a moving target, chasing the future, embracing the now, and delivering meaningful experiences and value to businesses and users.

Assertion: The most meaningful realization of design does not have to happen in the Obvious places, and you might be overlooking potential for great design.

Let's explore where design happens, and what makes design Design."

WP Admin as a User Experience by Jamie Sanchez on 10/19/2016

WP Admin as a User Experience

Leave those divs out of the WYSIWYG. Clean up that editing screen. This session covers the basics of Advanced Custom Fields, modifying the admin menu, and other ways to dummy-proof wp-admin and simplify data entry.

Small improvements

This discuss came from #68 and weren't addressed. I've created this issue to discuss the point and complete the required work.

If we plan to continue adding talks, do you think it'd be worth writing a script that generates the /archive page from a .json file or something?

  • This is being discussed in #69.

The favicon is not showing up on either of the pages on my machine and I can't find a reference to the .ico in any of the files in either repo, I might be missing something but I'm not sure how it's showing up in prod.

  • Since this have been merged to prod, I'm seeing the favicon working probably on my end. the .ico is in the main directory.

Should we make the spacing around the line break between the "Talk Archive" header and list of talks even?

  • @beckyrother suggested that the subheader be widened so that it only take one line. If this is the consensus, that could be easily implemented.

nit ~ I think there's an extra comma after David's name :P

  • Good catch! DevOps needs to be added after David's name :)

Clicking on the icon in the top should take the user back to the home page; can the buttons at the top stay the same between each page?

  • Shouldn't be a problem to implement.

Add a home button under the subhead
@beckyrother where exactly should this be?

Subhead copy to come :)
@beckyrother you can add any copy on this issue!

Inclusivity in Video Games + Nintendo Celebration by Paul Bersch on 02/28/2017

Inclusivity in Video Games + Nintendo Celebration

The spirit of Nintendo is one of creativity and inclusivity, inspiring a generation of games that can be played by anyone and that are more representative and diverse. I'll explore the ways indie, mobile, and mainstream games are becoming more inclusive, the missteps Nintendo and other developers have made, and how gaming is a hobby for everyone (especially people who don't identify as "gamers"). Then we'll play Wii U and 3DS (Pokemon!) games together!

Intentional and Accidental Career Development by David Michaels on 09/19/2017

Intentional and Accidental Career Development

From 2014 to 2017 I grew from being the office IT person to a devops engineer. Sometimes I was given great opportunities, sometimes I had to fight to learn or move throughout the company. I was given lots of help sometimes and dutifully ignored at others. In the end, I'm in a wholly different career than I expected to be.

Consider Static Site Generator

Summary

Should we move this site to a static site generator?

Review all the options

If we go the route of using a static generator, there are a ton of great options. I'm going to list a few that I use and love:

I personally love Vue.js. Gatsby is fun to work with. I've created many Jekyll sites, but the industry is very slowly moving away from it (at least it's not in the bleeding edge anymore).

Reasons to keep it simple

There is an argument to not move this site into a static site generator. It would take some time to make and add some more overhead and assumed knowledge for people to help maintain it.

As Tom suggested, It would be possible to write simple vanilla JavaScript to scrape a .json file and add the content to the "Archive" page. We would have to write out documentation on the proper way to add the json, so that anyone could create a ticket or some process to easily update.

Let's discuss

Gaming and Self Care

Just how in an industry where your life is your work and your hobby (coding personal projects on the weekends, etc etc) it's good to do things that have no real import or productive "value" outside of for funsies as a function of self-care
