virgo's Issues

Thoughts on Tox.chat

Hey guys,

I used to use Tox.chat. It's more of a protocol with multiple client implementations. Some years ago they had this issue where you could use 1 account per device ( there was no possibility to transfer an existing account ). I know they worked on that.

I would assume that years later it's improve and provides vast amount of functionalities. It's not very popular but people behind it are really into distributed / decentralized way of thinking

Thoughts on Signal

  • Groups don't work well
  • It exposes phone numbers
  • You can't export your data.

Thoughts on Voting Methods

Recent discussions in the OpenLibra.io community brought about this discussion.

Instant Runoff RVC is deeply flawed.

See https://twitter.com/jaekwon/status/1194890572240044032

All RVC voting have biases (preferences), but a non-concordent system where non-majority-acceptable proposals are passed IMO are fundamentally unacceptable.

Secrecy + UnfairProposals combo is inherently dangerous

See https://github.com/open-libra/governance/issues/4#issue-523855012

Privacy vs Transparency

There is a need to better understand when privacy of voting is needed, vs transparency, while addressing the issues above.

OpenLibra experiment

OpenLibra.io is conducting a vote and I have organized an open poll that is a variant of the Approval Voting process. Namely, a strict majority of approvals is necessary for a proposal to be deemed acceptable.

See https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1e-YlugA8Nwa0oeU-IgNBzlo2LfqOADN65uh9NR_45Ag/edit#gid=0 for all the gory details, and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Approval_voting for more commentary.

Update manifesto language to be stronger.

TODO: https://thebulletin.org/current-issue/

Nov 2019: "In this issue, top experts examine technology-related doomsdays the world might soon face if they go unaddressed, not to frighten readers, but to alert them, so they might act in time, making a loud and unmistakable demand: that the Earth be preserved, that the human experiment be extended, that midnight never toll."

Thoughts on Mastodon

Mastodon is a decentralized, self-hosted, open source alternative to Twitter. We should investigate Mastodon's UI to see if it can be repurposed for our needs. Specifically, we would need to add these features:

  • uncensorable, decentralized backend, likely blockchain
  • governance component that lets community members vote
  • veracity component that lets the community vote on the truthiness of news

Projects for the Virgo Directory

The last of the year's Virgo town hall discussed having a directory of projects that align with Virgo's vision. I wanted to get this started! What organizations can we start with, and what organizations can we quickly get onboard? @haymond @Michelle-L

Preliminary list:

  • Interchain Foundation
  • Cosmos
  • Tendermint Inc

Reach out opportunities:

  • Aragon (Michelle)
  • DAOStack (?)
  • Ecosia (Michelle)

Reason behind no anonymous donors for funding?

In FUNDING.md it states no anonymous donors. Why is this?
I understand that the only "reward" to expect is public recognition, but what if someone/organisation does not care of the public recognition and solely wants to support a good cause? Is it a legal aspect with KYC/AML?

Limits on Board/Executive positions across multiple DAOs

Any ideas on if and how to approach limiting the number of positions someone can have on multiple DAOs?

Simply, we could choose to go with a limit of 1 position in each across the ecosystem. However, I think that severely limits potential (at least initially until we have a critical, mainstream, userbase).

Otherwise I believe that in connected DAOs, i.e ones that serve a similar purpose/interact with each other frequently/are either used to enforce, oversee, or otherwise influence/regulate each other should have a 1 position ( executive, board) limit.

And impose lenient limits (if any) on DAOs that are not directly related to each other, even though they are all working together to achieve the same vision. Like a second or third degree of separation vastly reduces or eliminates limits.

Proposal that all decisions should be made by futarchy.

Futarchy is a protocol for groups of people to make decisions together.
It is based on the principle that the price of a market reveals the market clearing price, and even if someone wants to manipulate the price, they cannot.

If we carefully craft the securities in a market, then we can make it so that the market price reveals useful info to us, like telling us which decision we should make.

For example, one concern listed in the readme is food shortages.
In order to properly prepare for food shortages, it would be helpful to know the probability that they will occur in the next few months.
So we could make a security that says "If more than X people die of hunger in this area during this time period, then the security is worth 1 ATOM, otherwise it is worth 0 ATOMs"

And if we had a market for this security, we could know the probability of food shortages for this location and time.

Another example, we could make a security that says "if candidate X wins the election, then the bet is undone. If more than X people die of hunger, it is worth 1 ATOM. Otherwise it is worth 0 ATOM."
and one that says "if candidate X loses the election, then the bet is undone. if more than X people die of hunger, it is worth 0 ATOM. Otherwise it is worth 1 ATOM."
By making markets for both of these securities, we could find out if candidate X will have a positive or negative influence on the likelihood of food scarcity.

Futarchy is the only way for a community to make decisions that is not vulnerable to being corrupted by a rich person who wants to use their money to influence the outcome. So it is ideal for a community like Virgo to make decisions.

I wrote an essay about using futarchy to maintain the climate https://github.com/zack-bitcoin/amoveo-docs/blob/master//use-cases-and-ideas/climate_maintenance.md

centralized power structure?

Isn't it ironic and fairly off-brand that Virgo's sole executive is also its sole board member?
This current structure seems off for an org dedicated to DAOs and also not in alignment with its stated core values

Accountable?
Democratic?
