Currently each method call requires one map file to be included. The opcode-cache will help somewhat, but since not everybody tunes that right, it will probably be a good idea to memoize the data.

Currently a currencies subunits have to be calculated from the decimal digits, for example

$subunits = pow(10, CurrencyInfo::getFractionDigitsForCurrency('USD'))`;
$displayAmount = $amountOfCurrencySubunits / $subunits;

This conversion is required if a monetary amount is stored using the subunits (e.g. 123 cents) and not as a float value (e.g. 1.23 USD).

It would be useful to have this information available directly.
