Database null kontrolü hakkında sorun

Database fonksiyonları içindeki
if (database != null) open();
kod parçacığının
if (database == null) open();
şeklinde olması gerekmiyor mu? aksi takdirde eğer database null değilse open'ı çalıştırmanın ne katkısı var nalayamadım hocam.
