If I wanted to test a state in my workflow that's at, say step 20 in my workflow, do I have to transition through all the previous 19 states explicitly to get to the state I want to test? Or is there a shorthand to load all the previous 19 steps and start at step 20?

it "should tell us it is approved" do
expect { subject.approve! }.to_s == "technology is approved"
end

I commented out the puts statement in the approve method and this example did not fail.

I changed the approve method so that it returned the string 'technology is NOT approved' and the example still did not fail.
