The federal holidays listed on the opm site are hard-coded to the page. Unless it already exists, I'm requesting a public API to query for federal holidays by program year.
The site specifies Tahoma, Verdana, Arial, sans-serif
, but on Linux I only get sans-serif
, which isn't very flattering:
Have you considered using some fonts from Google Fonts? You can also inline these fonts to avoid having to ping fonts.googleapis.com

Hi Guys
Some of the links on agencies page might be outdated or changed.I am currently working on the agency region project and will collate the data and send it over to you for changes.
I'd suggest using Gov.uk as a model -- both in how it was developed, and also in design
How it was developed:
=> https://gds.blog.gov.uk/colophon-alpha/
=> https://gds.blog.gov.uk/2011/08/11/gov-uk-from-alpha-to-beta/
=> https://gds.blog.gov.uk/2011/07/29/alpha-gov-uk-wrap-up/
=> https://gds.blog.gov.uk/2011/05/23/what-was-the-evidence-users-information-needs-and-analytics/
The current Digital Service Standard in the UK:
=> https://gds.blog.gov.uk/2015/05/29/shorter-but-just-as-sweet-the-revised-and-updated-digital-service-standard/
Current design of gov.uk
=> https://www.gov.uk/
URL I landed at for 'government agencies and elected officials' (DIFFERENT ON SITE Vs. in your questionnaire) is actually https://beta.usa.gov/agencies, NOT ...'federal-govt'.
A couple of the APIs listed on this page have been deprecated or replaced:
Deprecated:
Non-.gov URLs API
Replaced with U.S. Digital Registry API:
Federal Mobile Product API
Social Media Registry API
I want to flag that "public sector" means government employment. When I saw the descriptive text below I assumed I was going to a page about jobs within government (state, local and federal). I believe the simple fix here is to change "public" to "private."
"Looking for a New Job
Find out about looking for work in the public sector and federal government."
This text appears on at least two pages that I could find:
http://beta.usa.gov/jobs-and-unemployment
http://beta.usa.gov/job-search

Rather than a completely separate site for Spanish language content I recommend that the back end CMS (and APIs) deliver content in the language according the preference set in the browser or get request. This would more easily scale to other languages (if needed).
Questionnaire item refers to clicking on 'state, local and tribal gov't' - on the site it's actually called ' state and tribal govts' (the word 'local' is not there).
On my tablet, the word 'What' in survey headline comes out white font on yellow background @@.
But I was able to complete the survey, to provide more than one response when asked to, etc.
Reminds me of the award-winning gov.uk. The site pages use plain language, and are uncluttered with extemporaneous info.Nice simple navigation - simple is best, and very hard to do.
Pages have a plethora of links. But so far, the external links I've tried take me to a new site, completely away from the site page that has more links for me to explore.
Would it be useful to the viewer to have external page links open new tabs/windows rather than navigate away from usa.gov? I'd like other thoughts on this.

Here is an example of why a user would want to use the Escape key to close a menu:
At this point, you want to close the menu and open another one.
This is easy to do with a mouse, but it takes either 5 Shift+Tabs plus an Enter key, OR, 7 Tabs plus Enter, if you are only using a keyboard.
A keyboard user would expect to type the Escape key while they were focused on the "Social Security Questions", and have the current menu close, with focus placed back on "Benefits, Grants, Loans".
The first search result doesn't go to the "VISAS DE TURISMO Y NEGOCIOS" page http://spanish.mexico.usembassy.gov/es/visas.html. It goes to the beta.gobierno.gov/inmigrantes-noresidentes page
When viewed in portrait mode, the last line of content in "Safeguard your Financial Future" and "Immigrate to the US" is cut off. This means I can't click the "Order your copy" link...
I can find the menu button, but (in portrait mode) it's literally touching the usa.gov logo. This looks incorrect.
The A-Z Index of U.S. Government Departments and Agencies is a collection of the United States Government Manual enhanced to include public facing or federal entities that directly serve the public. The 2019 release of the publication was released on 2019-11-21T04:01:00+00:00. The website should be updated accordingly with the new updated data.
I would also appreciate to get a copy of the output if possible (e.g., GOVMAN_2019_USAGOV.json
) if possible.
Hi, this could just be me but I ended up looking all over the site for 'what's on this page' til it occurred to me to return to where I'd just been at which point I finally registered that it was the blued box. Maybe make the headline a tiny bit bigger?
WAS able to find my agency, SAMHSA, by full name, not by the well-known acronym, using both methods. (People don't always remember what the associated words are.)
The site's own analytics tracker (not the DAP) is using the old style of tracker:
<script type="text/javascript">
var _gaq = _gaq || [];
_gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-28227333-1']);
_gaq.push(['_setDomainName', 'usa.gov']);
_gaq.push(['_setAllowLinker', true]);
_gaq.push(['_trackPageview']);
(function() {
var ga = document.createElement('script'); ga.type = 'text/javascript'; ga.async = true;
ga.src = ('https:' == document.location.protocol ? 'https://ssl' : 'http://www') + '.google-analytics.com/ga.js';
var s = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s);
})();
</script>
This should use the new Universal Analytics tracker, to avoid being shut off by Google in the future.
I note that the production usa.gov site does not use https. I recommend using https for all web content now.

Took quite a while for the site to come up when I clicked on the A-Z Index - when I did so repeatedly, there was an orange box surrounding what I was trying to click, which seemed to 'touch' the column alongside and almost seemed to be interfering with matters.
When I searched for 'per diem rates,' had a long list of results, though one was 'recommended' by the site.
