Contributions

We appreciate anyone who can offer skills towards the project (additions and refinements), and there is a desire for volunteers who can assist in the following roles/tasks:

  • App designer (improving Tero Subtitler's UI and UX)
  • Coders (resolving issues and developing features)
  • Localization (reaching more people)
  • Manual editor (for Tero Subtitler)
  • Subtitling consultant (for QC and keeping abreast of industry developments)
  • Video producer (for social media)
  • Web designer (for URUWorks)

We encourage public discussions (ideally in English) to avoid the doubling of work and reach agreements with others:

  • If there are questions or proposals, please create a topic (after searching for existing ones) in Discussions before heading to Issues.
  • Users can join our Discord channel for queries and discussions (using the relevant category).

History

URUWorks' subtitling solution began as Subtitle Workshop. In making the distinction from the other project with the same name, the organization is retiring that repository in favor of Tero Subtitler.

Donations

We appreciate any donation, no matter how small, to help cover the costs of developing the software that URUWorks maintains. Not only will you help them continue to be free and improved, but it implies to the members of URUWorks that their work is valued and appreciated, thus encouraging the investment of time and resources as part of our mission to provide all user bases with better apps and support.

terosubtitler's Issues

Make it clearer what URLs are accepted

Tero Subtitler uses yt-dlp for its Open Video from URL feature, but some users may assume it can open links from anywhere, so a list of valid websites.

Using Tero Subtitler alpha - Mac 10.11.6.

Combine functions of Find and Replace menus into one box

With exception to TextWrangler (and possibly some others), I think some applications handle Find and Replace in the one dialogue box (instead of doing them separately). Perhaps a tickbox should be added to enable 'replace' (or something)?

Using Tero Subtitler alpha - Mac 10.11.6.

[multiple] Open video from URL

There are known issues beyond the control of Tero Subtitler in relation to Open video from URL (i.e. third-party components):

  • Extract waveform doesn't work
  • Detect doesn't work in Shot Changes
  • 'Invalid data found when processing input' (according to debug)
  • This video only plays with sound
  • No warning when trying to open a private video (won't play)

Shortcuts disabled when saving or exporting

  1. 'File'>'Load subtitles'.
  2. Choose a file.
  3. 'Open'.
  4. 'File'>'Save subtitles as…' or 'File'>'Save translation as…'.
  5. Perform any of the following shortcuts: 'Copy', 'Cut', 'Paste', 'Select All', 'Undo', 'Redo'.

Result: No reaction.

No top menu available during start-up screen

Clicking on 'Tero Subtitler' at the top just flashed and displays menus (when we probably should have 'About' and 'Hide', etc).

This could be important for users with accessibility issues.

Conventions: Disney

Disney issued a set of guidelines for subtitles and captions and in respective languages.

Can these be added to Conventions?

Default adjustment to time via directional arrows applies to hour

Default.adjustment.to.time.via.directional.arrows.applies.to.hour.mov

Unless hour, minute, or second is selected or clicked, clicking either directional button should adjust frames/milliseconds by default (i.e. when nothing is selected).

Using Tero Subtitler alpha - Mac 10.11.6.

Fix subtitles: caps lock to normal casing

Caps lock to normal

I would like a feature in Tero that (intelligently) transforms the caps lock to normal casing (capitalising only for abbeviations, the beginning of sentences, and proper nouns, etc.).

Imported shot changes aren't always accurate

  1. Video > Open video…
  2. Choose this video [discretion advised] and Open
  3. Video > Shot changes…
  4. Import
  5. Choose this EDL (generated using Shutter Encoder {with fixes}) and Open
  6. Close

Results:

  • 00:02:07:05 should appear at 00:02:07:04
  • 00:03:13:13 should appear at 00:03:12:14
  • 00:03:46:06 should appear at 00:03:46:05

Transcription to timed text

Like YouTube's Auto-sync, Tero Subtitler could take untimed transcribed text and automatically produce synchronised timings from them.

EZTitles also has such a feature: Use the text of an existing transcription to automatically synchronize it to the audio.

Inaccurate warning after accessing relocated file

  1. Open a file
  2. Move the file from its directory
  3. Open>Recent files
  4. Choose the same file (of the old location)

Desired result: 'File cannot be found' (subsequently removed from list) [?]
Actual result: Dialogue: 'Error loading file, unrecognized format.'

Playback head and visual don't always update when skipping frames

[visual demonstration coming soon]

  1. Open video [discretion advised]
  2. Skip frame (on the toolbar) or use the mouse wheel (on video preview)

Result: Timecode changes, but the visual doesn't.

  1. Skip frame

Result: The visual changes, not displaying the previous one.

Adjustments to time aren't reflected in other boxes until after re-accessing entry

Adjustments.to.time.aren.t.reflected.in.other.boxes.until.after.re-accessing.entry.mov
  1. Open>Load subtitle…
  2. Click entry
  3. Double-click frames
  4. Adjust up or down

Expected result: other boxes adjust accordingly (in this case, duration).
Actual result: other boxes don't adjust (only after clicking elsewhere and then the entry).

Video doesn't automatically stop at the end

Video.doesn.t.automatically.stop.at.the.end.mov
  1. Open subtitle file
  2. Open video file
  3. Play the video until the end

Expected result: Pause icon becomes Play; the playback position is at the end
Actual result: Pause icon remains (indicating playback is ongoing)

  1. Open another video (or a subtitle file that loads another video)

Result: Pause icon remains (even though there's nothing playing)

Note: internal testing suggests this might be macOS-only.

[macOS] Source mode: every keyboard shortcut works but “Select all” (⌘ + A)

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Launch Tero Subtitler.
  2. Load a saved subtitle file (no matter what the file format is).
  3. Switch to “Source mode”.
  4. Try to cut, copy or paste something using the relevant keyboard shortcuts (⌘ + X ; ⌘ + C ; ⌘ + V respectively): you will be able to do that.
  5. Try to select all the text using ⌘ + A: nothing will happen.

Remnants after Remove Text for Hearing Impaired

  1. Open this iTT
  2. Tools > Fix subtitles…
  3. Tick 'Remove text for hearing impaired' and Apply

Desired result: hyphen is removed in the bottom line of entry 3; (empty) entries 1 and 2 are deleted
Actual result: hyphens remain in entries originally containing them; no entries are deleted

Dialogue invisible after minimising then maximising Tero Subtitler

Dialogue.invisible.after.minimising.then.maximising.Tero.Subtitler.mov
  1. Open a dialogue window (e.g. Shot changes)
  2. Click Minimise

Result: Dialogue visible

  1. Open Tero = dialogue invisible

Note: You can get the dialogue back after clicking elsewhere (i.e. not Tero, it seems).

Disable.text.box.if.there.is.no.subtitle.mov
  1. Open Tero Subtitler
  2. New
  3. File>Close subtitles…
  4. Choose 'No'
  5. Click in the text field

Expected result: inactive.
Actual result: can type in it.

Conventions: count space characters

There is a question in the FAQ section of Netflix's Partner Help Center:

How is reading speed measured? Do punctuation and spaces count?

Our internal software (as many others in the industry) calculates reading speed in characters per second. We calculate reading speed for each individual subtitle event as well as the average reading speed of the file.

Spaces and punctuation are counted by the software towards both the character count and the reading speed limit. For single-byte (half width) characters for character-based languages, punctuation and Latin characters count as 0.5 character, unless specified otherwise in the language Style Guide.

I believe I was once informed that spaces are counted, but it might be wise to add this as an option (also in making it clearer), enabling it for the Netflix profiles (at least) in Conventions.

Different default file format won't be saved in tero.cfg

Step to reproduce:

  1. Open Tero Subtitler
  2. Press “New empty subtitle”
  3. Go to “Settings”
  4. Set “Default file format” to “WebVTT” in “General” tab
  5. Close Tero Subtitler and re-open it
  6. Custom setting has been saved in “Settings” window, but “SubRip” format is still the default file format (as one can see in toolbar), because the new parameter is not updated in tero.cfg file (DefEncoding="139" won't change).

  1. Open subtitle file
  2. Open video file
  3. Jump to subtitle with high CPL count
  4. Drag the edge of the preview window left or right

Expected result: subtitle size decreases/increases
Actual result: subtitle size remains the same (meaning unintended line breaks, etc)
