react-chrome-extension's Introduction

react-chrome-extension

Alt text

This is the first in a series of React boilerplate projects to help web developers learn and understand React. This project actually came about as I was creating my latest project, StyleStash - Save Your favorite CSS Styles.

Video Code Walkthrough

If you're more of a visual learner, I've recorded a 20 minute video walkthrough of this project.

Local Testing

npm start

Runs the app in the development mode.
Open http://localhost:3000 to view it in the browser.

Testing Inside Chrome

This project needs to be built in order to take advantage of the Chrome Extension API, such as using the Content script to get the extension's ID, or using the Chrome Storage API. These features cannot be used when running this project locally.

To load as a developer extension inside of Chrome:

  1. npm run build
  2. Navigate to chrome://extensions/ in your browser
  3. Toggle the Developer mode switch on in the top right hand corner
  4. Click the Load unpacked button in the top left corner
  5. Select the build folder inside of this project folder

Builds the app for Chrome to the build folder.

react-chrome-extension's Issues

Save modal state on page change

Hello, I'm using the extension, I'm changing the buttons states in the modal depends on user clicks, it works fine but whenever I change the web page the modal window refreshes its state and I have to click on the buttons again. Is there a way to save the state of the modal window so when I click on the extension after page change it doesn't change again ?

How do you eliminate jquery from this

Thanks for the great work here.
Im trying to use it without the jquery dependency. I tried to replace the usage on content.js : 16

$(styleStashHTML).appendTo('body');

with vanilla js

var div = document.createElement('div');
div.innerHTML = styleStashHTML.trim();
document.body.append(div);

But compiling the extension this way does not load the react components on .modal-window

Could you figure out why?

Code is not running in VS Code

"Error: error:0308010C:digital envelope routines::unsupported". This error message is thrown after npm intall and npm start
