glimpse's Introduction

Glimpse Image Editor

Glimpse Image Editor is a downstream fork (derivative work) based on the GNU Image Manipulation Program 2.10.18 source code, and it is shared under the terms of the GNU General Public License version 3.

You can find out more information on our FAQs page: https://glimpse-editor.github.io/about/

What is different about the Glimpse fork?

The GNU Image Manipulation Program is primarily intended for long-standing Linux enthusiasts and power users.

Glimpse Image Editor is an optional alternative intended to assist users that are offended or made uncomfortable by the "gimp" name, and assist free software advocates that encounter barriers when they recommend the GNU Image Manipulation Program to friends, family, coworkers and employers.

Our project also focusses on making the software more "enterprise ready" so it is easier to modify and distribute for schools and workplaces. That means fewer "easter eggs", improved build and packaging tooling/documentation, backported fixes on a known-stable base we support for at least a year, and a more efficient Windows installer.

We also plan to improve usability and accessibility through our choice of configuration settings, third-party plugins, and our own changes.

For a detailed view of our changes, check the NEWS file.

How will the package versions work?

  • Glimpse Image Editor 0.1.0 and 0.1.2 fork from GNU Image Manipulation Program 2.10.12
  • Glimpse Image Editor 0.2.0 forks from GNU Image Manipulation Program 2.10.18

You can read more information about this and our ongoing release schedule at https://glimpse-editor.github.io/about/#how-does-your-release-numbering-work

We are also working on a similar project in parallel called "Glimpse NX". That will be provide a more lightweight and accessible user interface for the same components that the GNU Image Manipulation Program uses. Keep an eye on our social media accounts and blog for more details.

How can I keep up to date with Glimpse's progress?

Our official project website is now live at https://glimpse-editor.github.io.

You can also follow us on the fediverse, Facebook and Twitter.

You can see how the forked code is progressing on the dev-g210 branch.

How can I build Glimpse?

All of the initial build instructions can be found in the HACKING.md file. Additional documentation is provided in the build-aux folder.

For further information, read the Glimpse developer wiki.

How can I contribute?

Full details for how to help are available in the CONTRIBUTING.md file.

You can also help by talking about us on social media, writing a positive blog post and helping people use Glimpse Image Editor.

To help us cover our costs, please donate to this project via Github Sponsors or Open Collective. If you can afford to do so we also encourage you to donate to GNU Image Manipulation Program as that helps the upstream project we rely on.
