I've resolved this by manually writing data from my input stream to a throttle stream, which I in turn manually write to the speaker instance.

Piping data to the speakers through throttle

var speakers = new Speakers(...);
var throttle = new Throttle(...);

// input1 is an MP3 transcoded to PCM
input1.on('data') { throttle.write(data); }
throttle.on('data') { speakers.write(data); }

Upon switching to a different input stream:

throttle.removeAllListeners('data');
input1.removeAllListeners('data');
var throttle = new Throttle(...);

// input2 is an MP3 transcoded to PCM
input2.on('data') { throttle.write(data); }
throttle.on('data') { speakers.write(data); }
  1. I remove the 'data' event listeners from both the input and throttle
  2. I create a new throttle instance
  3. Add the same data event listeners to the new input and throttle

from node-speaker.
