chromium-updater's Introduction

FreeSmug Updater for Chromium (Mac) Extension

Chromium Extension to check for, download and install the latest Chromium revisions from FreeSMUG.org

Mac OSX only

-- Safest to install from the Chrome Webstore

For manual install, go to chrome://extensions, turn on Developer Mode at the top, click 'Load unpacked extension' and load the folder contents. Auto Updates won't work when installed this way.

chromium-updater's Issues

Licensing Suggestion

Oh! Not again, Please!! GPL License for Chromium updater?? This wonderful software should have had a much more friendly and permissible license like the MIT or BSD or even Apache 2.0. Specially considering that this is an extension app for chromium which itself is licensed under the wonderful BSD. Another point is the fact that, this piece of application is meant as a no nonsense permissible no strings attached option to google chrome. So, why not take the better route to MIT or BSD? Moreover, BSD and MIT are also anyways compatible with GPL, so if a user wants to add GPL code to an application under a BSD or MIT license, they can, as these licenses are compatible. So, BSD /MIT is basically the superset of all Open Source licenses and are considered the mother of Open Source ideology.
What say?
Thanks for the excellent piece of work by the way! I just wish it was under a better license like chromium itself.

OS detection

I log into chromium so my extensions, history, bookmarks, etc. are shared between all instances of chromium have the same things. Since chromium-updater is specific to OS X, I'd rather not be told that chromium is out of date in Debian Linux. Debian has somewhat of a delay before they push out the latest and greatest chromium, so sometimes it lags behind what the updater says I should have.

Under no circumstances is the FreeSMUG build appropriate for Debian. If the extension could detect the OS it is running under, and disable itself if it's not OS X, that would be great.

Some questions [solved]

So I've found this extension and also this extension. I don't know which one to use. I'm on windows, and I'm not sure if the other extension is for windows chromium or not. I know this one is for mac os x chromium, and I could just modify this extension to get the windows updates and then use it for private use purposes, but what about that other extension? What's the difference between that extension and this one?

And a few more things - if the dev channel build of chromium has auto-update, will I really need either of these extensions? Because I could just do the dev channel and I'd have a version of chromium that auto-updates without any custom extensions. And finally, is the other updater extension actually that now-deleted "chromium updater" extension from the chrome web store (i believe the ID of that was hcmicnfbmcjhlbdohdmdhfjlbigkcddl)?

Thanks.

certificate security error attempting to connect to freesmug.org using https instead of http

version 0.1.1.2
Press the 'Visit Website' button from the Updater icon drop down. It attempts to connect using https secure protocol to https://freesmug.org/chromium. This results in an error because freesmug.org site is hosted by www.wikidot.com with subdomain freesmug.wikidot.com, so it fails the site certification. Chromium will issue 'Privacy error' and will not connect. The Updater should be using the plain http://freesmug.org/chromium (not https but http).

Not working anymore

Is the extension supposed to still work?
It is not anymore for me. It is looking for a new version forever.
