js_application_reloader's Issues

Handling JS apps outside the Rails asset pipeline

The current solution is designed for the scenario where the JS app is lives within the Rails app (i.e. under app/assets). But, where the JS app source code is completely separate an alternative solution would be needed. In conjunction @theirishpenguin and I are unsure as to whether this scenario is worth solving, and so we are taking a poll.

Proposed Alternative Solution

  • The JS app is watched for changes by an external service, or somewhere in its own build process (e.g. Grunt / Gulp / Broc task, or with a Github hook)
  • A version number for the JS app is updated (This could be done either i) using Redis or ii) in the Rails app middleware (e.g. set up an API endpoint called by the webhook, eliminating Redis dependency))
  • The Rails app includes the version number of the JS app (i.e. querying Redis) when it serves ANY responses
  • As before, the JS app reloads itself

Other ideas are welcome.
