Cura For Makerbots

Tools to use Cura as a primary slicer with Makerbots printers

Makerbots Profile

The file Cura_Makerbot_standard_profile.ini is a standard Cura profile for creating gcode for Makerbot Replicator 2 and 2X Desktop 3D Printers. Open this profile before creating your gcode.

The output gcode will still lack a few tweaks to be compatible with Makerware.

Converter script

Update : This script is no longer needed since Ultimaker/CuraEngine@4f5b366

The script Cura_gcode_converter.sh converts the previously generated gcode to the Makerware format. You can then create an X3G from it in Makerware to print the model.

What is does :

  • Replaces M109 with M104 (Temperature setting for the extruder)
  • Comments G21 and G90 (Units and positionning)
  • Replaces M107 with M127, and M106 with M126 (Filament fan stuff)
  • Replaces G28 with a proper G162 (X and Y homing)

Please contribute !

If you're using Cura to slice and a Makerbot to print, do not hesitate to point out problems and pull request modifications to these settings and scripts

curaformakerbots's Issues

Retraction settings

Where did you come up with the retraction settings included in the profile? I was printing some engraved text prints and the retractions seemed to be causing some print failures because there was too much air being introduced to the extruder melt zone. However I am also just starting to play with the cura slicer so there could of been a number of other issues.

The MBI slicer uses much slower retraction speeds and smaller retraction distances. The speed is 25mm/s and the retraction distance is 1.3 mm. Your profile is using 25mm/s and 5 mm for the 2 values respectively. the melt zone in the rep 2/2x extruder is somewhere in the 5-10 mm range.

Why the sideways action?

I'm wondering, why didn't you just contact me 2 months ago? It's a few lines of code to add the changes so you no longer need a script:
Ultimaker/CuraEngine@4f5b366

(I'm not allowed to post in the MakerBot Opperators google group, which is a bit annoying. Does not mean I'm not willing to help out getting Cura up and running for MakerBot users)
