About the Role
The Senior Designer will contribute their creative energy to a passionate team of open source hacktivists. You will be responsible for capturing user insights and creating a collage of imaginative ideas which can be realised through agile collaboration with a team of technical superstars. You will ignite HOT’s dynamic community of digital humanitarians by understanding the needs of a diverse group of staff, stakeholders, volunteers, contributors and users in order to inspire user flow and delight as we map an area home to one billion people.

You will work closely with the Director of Technology and Innovation and the Senior Technical Lead to support the entire team with User Experience and Product Design projects. You will lead and mentor the creative growth of our team and contribute to a culture of open sourced, human centred and inclusive technologies that inspire humanitarian action.

You’ll be involved in every aspect of our product development process, from early concept, to wireframe, to prototype/mockup, to pixel perfect design, build, and launch. Since we are a small team, you’ll also have your hand in directing and prioritizing the product roadmap. In this role, you’ll be responsible for owning the user experience across HOT’s existing and future projects.

The Senior Designer will coordinate and collaborate with key HOT_Tech supporting functions including the Director of Technology, Senior Technical Lead, Module Owners and the Community Manager.

You will support the module teams in translating user needs to product requirements and provide input for backlog prioritisation. -Connect, Collaborate, Co-create: Through close collaboration with the Senior Technical Lead and Director of Technology and Innovation you will distill the HOT Technology Strategy into elegant technology solutions that respond to community needs. The Senior Design Lead will connect and collaborate with the HOT community to co-create simple, yet sophisticated experiences that support and enhance a mapper’s growth and journey.

Responsibilities
-Contribute to the creative vision and implementation of the HOT technology strategy
-Conceptualise ideas that bring simplicity and user friendliness to complex design challenges
-Facilitate the design thinking process including user research, discovery and product concept to imagine the HOT technology strategy into existence
-Develop and implement successful design strategies, working with and managing feedback from the global HOT community
-Collaborate with HOT’s global tech team and open source community to define, build, and release new user centered updates and enhancements
-Oversee all design projects, from conception to delivery
-Construct user flows, wireframes, and prototypes that effectively communicate design concepts for validation
-Develop and deliver well-documented, product design that accurately reflect HOT’s mission
-Mentor and guide team members, helping them develop and grow
-Creatively guide the team’s design culture through collaboration, feedback, and iteration.
-Additional graphic/visual design assistance and tasks as required

Qualifications & Experience
-Qualification in relevant creative field or a strong portfolio of relevant creative projects
-5+ years experience with interaction design, user experience design, or similar field
-5+ years experience designing digital products and systems
-Experience working in a dynamic open source community across multiple stakeholder groups and with multiple concurrent projects; OpenStreetMap (OSM) an advantage
-Experience working in international humanitarian or development agencies/NGOs
-Working knowledge of Principles for Digital Development and Human Centered Design
-Experience managing diverse, distributed teams over multiple geographies
-Demonstrated ability to design and define user experiences from whiteboards and post-its to wireframes and prototypes; tool and software flexible
-Demonstrated history of mentoring, teaching, or guiding other designers and team members
-Experience guiding or contributing to agile teams or projects

About the Role
We’re seeking a skilled and enthusiastic ‘full-stack’ individual fluent in a variety of programming languages, databases, and front-end programming to support a passionate team of humanitarian hacktivists. The role will support the HOT tech team in collaboratively delivering a range of open source solutions that support HOT in our strategic ambition to map an area home to one billion people. The Junior Developer will be part of an agile team building tools to assist with the collection and communication of humanitarian data, coalescing around geospatial information. The work will predominantly be focused on backend ‘crunching’, however, front-end skills will also get a good workout. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to grow and be mentored by some of the humanitarian sector’s leading geospatial technologists.

Responsibilities
-Development tasks include backend development, designing and deploying services, integrations with and consumption of third party services, database development, unit testing and mock data generation, development of regression testing scenarios and scripts
-This position will cover some DevOps responsibilities, especially pertaining to change management and source control, continuous integration, and deploying and maintaining test and production environments. This may include some scripting and automation tasks, test development, database management activities, and server configuration management
-Responsibilities will include analysis of requirements, authoring of documentation, and detailed design, both independently and as part of a team
-Work with other engineers, designers, and test engineers to bring prototypes to life
-Participate in agile software planning and development activities including daily standups, user story and task organization and grooming activities, and effort estimation
-Monitoring technical performance of applications to ensure code optimisations
-Troubleshoot and debug applications

Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) is a US-based NGO and global community of thousands of volunteers working together to use maps and open data for humanitarian response and the Sustainable Development Goals. About the Role
The Scrum Master/Mentor will oversee the scrum and development teams and coach and mentor the HOT tech team as agile/scrum is adopted more broadly across the organisation. You will be an Agile advocate and scrum superstar, which will motivate those around you. The Scrum Master/Mentor will act as a buffer between the scrum teams and module owners and maintain a safe working environment for the team by helping with conflict resolution.

You will need to be able to think fast to help solve problems. Strong communication skills are essential as you will be communicating with the development and scrum teams and the module owners. You will be experienced in managing stakeholders and multiple priorities and are dedicated to delivering win-win solutions.

The Scrum Master/Mentor will coordinate and collaborate with key HOT_Tech supporting functions including the Director of Technology, Senior Technical Lead, Module Owners and Community Manager.

Responsibilities
-Lead the scrum team in using Agile methodology and adopt scrum practices of transparency, inspection and adaptation
-Ensures the team is practicing the core agile principles of self-direction, collaboration, business prioritization, team accountability, and transparency, toward the consistent and iterative delivery of a working product
-Supports the Module Owners and Development teams, to refine and manage product backlog
-Supports the Module Owners to ensure feature requests are well-defined and prioritized and product roadmaps are provided that convey a clear vision of the product
-Provides hands-on supportive leadership and coaching of scrum teams in all aspects of scrum (facilitating daily stand-ups, sprint planning, sprint review and retrospectives, daily routines, self-organizing team, productive team collaboration, iterative development, continuous quality improvement, managing flow, calculating velocity, limiting work in progress, etc.)
-Assesses the maturity of the team and organization and coaches the team to higher levels of maturity, at a pace that is sustainable and appropriate for the team and organization
-Ensures that release deliverables are clearly communicated
-Identifies risks and supports mitigation activities, resolve conflicts and issues that occur
-Removes impediments that would prevent the team from achieving its sprint and release goals (internal and external to the team)
-Ensures that retrospectives produce actionable tasks; follows through to ensure that recommendations are implemented successfully and in a timely manner
-Assists with internal communication, improve transparency, and radiate information
-Review scrum processes, drive scrum process improvements and coach teams

About You
We are seeking a senior open source technologist with demonstrated experience leading agile/scrum for technology development. Qualifications & Experience
-High school degree or equivalent in a relevant field.
-Agile/Scrum certifications, preferably PSM I or II.
-5+ years managing end-to-end product delivery
-5+ years experience with an agile software development team, some leadership responsibility
-3+ years experience working in international humanitarian or development agencies/NGOs.
-Demonstrated ongoing education in scrum; e.g. training, conferences, self-study etc.
-Some experience with other iterative methodologies and Agile approaches, e.g. Kanban
-Experience with OpenStreetMap (OSM) and associated OSM tools an advantage
-Be fluent in working in a fully or partially remote work environment
-Experience managing diverse, distributed teams over multiple geographies
-Experience presenting and communicating with C-level executives
-Exposure on stakeholder management
-Good understanding on product management and business analysis
