The challenge in the "Logging in to Supercomputing Wales" episode is to do what the instructor has just done. If learners are following along (as we encourage them to do), then they will already have done this, making the majority of the exercise null. On the other hand if you split things so that you demo first, then the learners try, then you have to repeat the explanation so users can follow along step-by-step, since there are so many points where things can go wrong.
When I've taught this I've gone with the former approach (stopping regularly to check users were keeping up, and making sure that users ask immediately in case of authentication failure), and suggested just checking sinfo --long
as the challenge, but that is a little short and uninteresting.
I'd suggest expanding the "Logging In" section to include:
- resetting SCW password
- checking username
- stopping in case of authentication failure to ask an instructor
- a callout about fail2ban
Then remove the duplicated material from the challenge, and instead check some other easy things - maybe pwd
and hostname
.
