Hello,
Thanks for reaching out and reporting this. This is very strange. I mean,
it's the first time I heard of something like this: an analysis running in
SocNetV to trigger the opening of another unrelated application. How is
this possible?
There is no such 'functionality' in SocNetV and no connection whatsoever
between SocNetV and Balena. The SocNetV code is here in Github, as you
know, you can check for yourself.
Are you absolutely sure that there is not something else in your system?
The debug lines you sent are also strange. Only the first two are from
SocNetV. The next messages are not from our application. There is no
"packageUpdatable ..." or "ready-to-show ..." debug messages in SocNetV.
Also, in both cases, you are using a quite old version (2.8) - and I don't
really know how that version was packaged in those distros.
So, can you please try the official AppImage of our latest version from the
Releases page https://github.com/socnetv/app/releases or from our Downloads
page: https://socnetv.org/downloads ?
PS: I am also running Ubuntu 22.04 right now. I searched the repositories,
there is no SocNetV 2.8 package. Where did you find that?

I agree, it is very strange indeed, which is why I decided to post it. I downloaded the version through PopShop (the software center in PopOS) and the Ubuntu software center. In both the version is 2.8 (see second screenshot). Initially, I thought that there must be something wrong with my system, but since I could reproduce the bug in a VM using Ubuntu I have no idea what's happening. Admittedly, my knowledge in this area is rather limited. Perhaps, Etcher is the problem. Using the AppImage (Version 3.1) the bug still occurs (see screenshot below). However, using Etcher through AppImage instead of .deb solves the problem. So, again Etcher might be the root cause. I will try to reproduce the bug on a different computer.

Hello,
Thanks again for reporting this. I was able to reproduce this. The reason
you see this is due to a known bug in Balena:
balena-io/etcher#3374
When you ask SocNetV to compute an analysis, the program creates the
corresponding report in HTML format and saves it in ~/socnetv-data, i.e.
~/socnetv-data/socnetv-report-centrality-out-degree-24-02-19-125455.html
Then it calls the openUrl() method of QDesktopServices, which opens the
file in the default browser in your Operating System:
QDesktopServices::openUrl(QUrl::fromLocalFile(fn));
It seems that Balena Etcher (and generally Electron apps, like that) has
registered itself as default text/html mime handler in your (and mine) OS.
So, the command QDesktopServices::openUrl(QUrl::fromLocalFile(fn)) above
essentially calls Balena (or any other Electron app installed in our
system) to handle the opening of the html report file generated by SocNetV.
You can verify this, by creating a random .html file in your computer and
double-click on it. Balena will try to open it, not firefox or chrome. So,
it's a more general problem, not specific to SocNetV.
If you right click on it and select Properties -> Open With, you will see
that the default app is Balena. :)
To sum up, there is no bug in SocNetV, it's a bug in another application
(or to be fair in another application framework).
To fix this is simple: right click on any html file on your computer,
select Properties -> Open With, and there select the proper browser to open
html files, rather than Balena :)
