Thanks for the bug report.
We try to upgrade our dependencies as soon as we can unless it requires too much work or there are other incompatibilities.
We already use workspace dependencies for the dependencies which are shared. (When upgrading we adapt it, usually)
Do you have any example of dependency which is duplicated?

The duplicates you list are dependencies of some of our dependencies. Most of them are binary incompatible and can not be merged by cargo (e.g. different mayor version numbers or different minors for 0.x-crates).

@flukejones Thanks for raising it! It's always great to have a ticket as an excuse to poke into dependencies -- especially so shortly before a release :-)
And yeap, I also find this dependency mess annoying. Some eco-system wide effort to clean up dependencies would be very welcome. Unfortunately I have no good idea how to do such a cleanup myself in a way that scales and does not break again right after it is done once.
