Esp8266 WebTTL

A very simple & fast WebTTL based on ESP8266 Wifi Module, coding by PlatformIO/Arduino

The program running on an ESP8266 board allows you to access your device TTL remotely from any device that has a browser.

The project is fully functioning and the speed of controlling TTL is the same as you connect the cable via an USB-TTL device.

Build steps

  1. Install PlatformIO(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmvMvIphMnY)
  2. Install Adafruit BusIO
  3. Build the project and upload to an ESP8266 board
  4. Modify SSID information in data/config.json.
  5. Build SPIFFS image with "Build Filesystem Image" and upload to the board.

Wire Connecting

  1. Connect SSD3306 OLED I2C correctly

  2. Reset the board and the board will startup connecting your SSID.

  3. Another option: remove config.json, the board will startup in Wifi SmartConfig mode, use ESP8266 smartconfig Android app to send wifi information.

  4. After the board is connected with wifi and got correct IP, like this: IP

  5. Use a browser on your PC, enter the IP: http://IP and input your TTL wire baud rate, like: Browser

  6. Then you should see the screen like this: RunningPic

Feature supported

1. Both Webclient and Telnet/23 support

With the most convenient web ttl debuging support, you can also connect to IP:23 with a telnet command from any internet/LAN device.

2. Input & Output contents sync

All contents are sync displayed if multiple clients is connected, no matter telnet or browser

3. TTL Output Content cache

Server will send last seen screen content to newly connected Web clients, this function make the user exprience much better than a blank screen while the connections initially made.

4. TF card logging support

All TTL output contents will be stored to a file with a TF card connected via SPI interface. (this function is not wel tested, and may cause output delay)

5. Works without an OLED display

If you don't have an OLED display, you can got your IP ADDRESS from your router DHCP offered page. OR HERE: you can count the LED blink times after the Wifi Connected for 1 minute(TTL and network should be IDLE). Like, if your IP address is 192.168.2.15, the default LED on the board will BLINK 15 times!

6. LED blink

The LED blinks with different rate while in different states:

  1. Under Wifi Smart Config, blink is very fast
  2. Under Connecting a Wifi, blink is slow
  3. The LED is ON constantly while the WIFI is CONNECTED.

Problems

  1. Telnet console will echo your typed character twice, this cannot be solved, but in some platforms, you may try to "TURN OFF LOCAL ECHO" to avoid this issue.
  2. While the TTL cable is connected to some boards(the boards pull down TX pin), the ESP8266 won't start, please disconnect the TTL cable before power on the board

For developers

Files under src/html is orignal seperated H5 client with multiple files, but after my debug, web server in ESP won't serve correctly with serveral requests simultaneously. So I merged all files into one html, which is located in /data/index_all.html
