It sounds like you started selecting messages, but the X icon, the garbage icon, and the forward icon didn't show. But then you restarted and it looked correct again.
Given that you're on linux, my guess is that Signal Desktop was updated on disk while it was still running, and the running version couldn't find those icons anymore.
I'm guessing you have automatic updates enabled?

Good idea man. All your guesses are right. I had the same idea... let's wait for an update and see...

Thanks for investigating! I'm going to close this until you see it again.

Issue happened again, on 7.2.1>7.3 upgrade. Now it was the "Send" icon on the bottom right that didn't display. Although, knowing where it should show I could click there to send OK.
@scottnonnenberg-signal I think you can open this bug again.
Maybe Signal should restart on its own on upgrade the same way Syncthing linux does: they have a second process with the same name they call "monitor" whose job is to restart the main one (limit 3 times like Windows services)
https://docs.syncthing.net/users/syncthing.html
--no-restart
Do not restart Syncthing when it exits. The monitor process will still run to handle crashes and writing to logfiles (if configured to).
