Hi @martinec,
first of all thanks for creating the first issue and for the kind words. We are trying to create something super simple, yet powerful.
I will address your points 1 by 1 as there is a lot to cover.
While testing, I noticed that there are some features described on your website that are not available in the open-source version. Am I missing something?
We are actually still in a very early stage. We started building this 2 months ago and we are aiming to actually launch a beta in May, so we don't really have a product yet. All the features in the site will available we are just focusing first on making a very simple mvp. If you are interested in what is included in the MVP you can check the discussion: https://github.com/orgs/Shelf-nu/discussions/30#discussioncomment-5345691
As for the second part of the question, so far what we have discussed is that all featured, including the ones that will be premium on the hosted version, will be available in the open source version.
To address the features a bit more specific:
- Adding tags
- Assigning depreciation
- Assigning owners
- Archiving assets
- Sorting filters
This will come straight after MVP. In the discussion you can see that for MVP we are just doing a simple search by name and filter by category.
- Assigning location
This is MVP but its the last feature we have left to build. We will most likely be working on it next week.
Concerning your feature requests, thanks for sharing your ideas. We can see some stuff we already have planned as well as some new stuff so thats great.
- Allowing the creation of customizable fields, such as purchase date, serial numbers, warranty information, etc.
We do have custom fields planned. Still not sure exactly how it will work but we already got it requested by a few beta testers.
- Enabling the creation of associations between assets, for example: server_03 > rack_01, disk_01 > server_03, etc.
We have discussed this as well. Plan is to allow assets to have a parent asset, so you can manage a complex multi-level structure.
- Allowing the selection of fields to display in the "home > items" list. Currently, only the item name, ID, and category are shown.
Its something I have thought of but we never discussed it. Will definitely add it to the feature list.
- Providing the option to define rules for asset IDs instead of assigning them automatically.
Can you give us a bit more context for this? I want to better understand the goal.
- Supporting the creation of hierarchical categories and locations.
We have had discussions about this already but we are still in doubt exactly how to manage this, especially the categories part. Adding multi-level categories can introduce a complexity we want to avoid so we are thinking of alternatives how to manage this in a way that is simpler for everyone.
- Allowing the export of the asset database in .csv format.
This will come soon, as well as an import feature for people who want to create many assets at once. Those features will be premium in the hosted version.
- Providing customization options for QR codes, including images, margins, dots, corners, background, etc.
We have decided that for now we will focus on utility over looks. We do have this planned at a later stage, but our main goal now is to finish MVP and release a v1, so this will come in some time in the future.
Overall as you can see we are still super early stage and there is lots of features to build as well as chores to do. We will also make sure to make our designs and design system public and add some kind of roadmap to Github so it is clear what is coming next.
If you have some more questions or suggestions, feel free to drop them here.
