shed's Introduction

Hello! 👋

My name is Sen Hongo and I'm a freelance software engineer helping companies build prototypes and bring products to market. I'm currently (2023-03) helping aeco bring Chubic to life! Previously I've also worked on fundbook and Strap. I'm involved in all phases, from the initial ideation to user research and testing, UI and UX design, systems design and finally, writing the code that makes the magic happen!

Other Home DIY plans

Just something that came to my mind during a walk.
These are the Home DIY projects I would like to do. I don't have to complete them this year though a few of them are probably MUSTs.

来季の雪支度の下準備

  • 小屋完成
  • デッキパーゴラ
  • 車庫囲い
  • 裏パーゴラ
  • 玄関拡大
  • loft room wall

MUST complete this year (before winter season)

  • 小屋完成
  • デッキパーゴラ
  • 車庫囲い

Driveway deck

Description

Building a mini-deck around the back door.
Will probably use up our remaining 2x4.

I'd like to make it also be a shelf if we have spare materials. So that I may hang the remaining lumber that's right now just sitting on the floor, soaked in snow melt.

I don't have exact dimensions, but something like 800mm x however long my timber is, 3m?

Height will be low enough for the door to open.

Objectives

  • able to take off my shoes before entering
  • a little platform so that I can easily move things between garage and kitchen without bending all the way down and to the side.
  • maybe a small set of stairs

Tasks

  • draw up rough plans
  • make actual measurements and adjust plans
  • ???
  • cut
  • assemble
  • 🎊

Scaffolding

Next Actions

  • mow the overgrown grass
    • there's quite a lot and we'll need to separate it into multiple sessions.
    • depending on the weather, this is either a Sat or Sun job
  • disassemble previous front deck
    • hope to disassemble this during down time (rain, charging batteries, etc)
  • build scaffolding

Previously

We need to build some scaffolding around the foundations.

I have pictures somewhere, probably on Sanakan. Upload those pictures.

  • upload scaffolding reference pictures
  • measure the area
    • ok, I didn't actually measure anything. I stood on where the shed floor was and looked around to see where the land sloped away to be sure my supports wouldn't be hanging in the air. LGTM! 👍
  • figure out how it will be assembled
    • i have a rough draft, but I'd like to make some changes
  • get materials
    • base stones
    • timber
  • build bracing around pier

Clean up scaffolding material

Sort and tidy up the scaffolding material.

Separate the old moldy ones from the ones that still look nice and fresh.

We'll use them for the garage extensions.

Weeds

Let's work on this over the week.
Half an hour to an hour each day.

Sealing roof air gap

The area where the overhang is.

We've mounted small 2x4 off cuts along the top ridge to provide a mounting point

  • measure the size of each gap
  • cut MDF to size
  • mount
  • spray expanding foam around edges
  • while we're at it, spray expanding foam around the other 3 edges as well

Remaining tasks and scheduling

Winter is here. The resorts have opened and it is time to go snowboarding. It will probably still be a month or so before the season goes full open. Until then, we should try to finish up as much as possible of the shed. If we can get the interior and electronics up, we can consider it to be done.

This issue is for us to list up all remaining tasks that we can think of, and try to assign a proper schedule to it.

  • sealing the air gaps of the overhang
  • remaining insulation bits (2nd layer of wall, ceiling, entrance top, triangular section)
  • window frame
  • door frame
  • dry wall
  • do I need to apply mud?
  • power points

Until now, I've focused on structure because I wanted to play build. Now that we're where we are, I need to start thinking about the interior designs too. Time to start collecting ideas.

Framing

  • measure floor panel spacing
  • cut floor panel spacing
  • side wall (R)
  • side wall (L)
  • back wall
  • front wall
  • roof
  • panels

Shed interiors

  • Figure out how we're cover to cover the walls and ceiling.Plywood or plaster board.
  • figure out where the electrical outlets are
  • buy the boards (ply/plaster)
  • install them
    • walls
    • ceiling

Interior floor

Tasks

  • caulk the seams
  • lay plastic covers
  • double layer of foam panels
  • lay horizontal 2x4 , 4 pieces
  • lay vertical 2x4, probably 9 pieces

Separated from #11 as this can't really be worked on until the walls are insulated.

The plan is to have 2 layers of 50mm insulation, followed by 2 layers of 2x4 framing. The top layer will be a single 12mm sheet of plywood. Finally for the finish, we will use simple tiled carpets.

This is a blocker for the final door insulation, let's do this ASAP.

Ceiling insulation

Get more 50mm foam to fit between the roof rafters.

  • figure out how much more panels we need
  • buy the panels
  • do the thing

Door inner framing

We've tested that the frame can be done with 1 piece of 12mm ply and 2 pieces of MDF

  • trim the ply to the same width as the inner door frame
  • cut the necessary strips of MDF
  • mount

BUGFIX: Redo roof prep [URGENT]

The roof prep I made was too shoddy and it has to be redone more professionally.

  • the pop edges are not aligned
  • the front thing is 90 degrees flat to the horizon when it should be at the same angle (8) as the roof
  • the bottom edges are not aligned

Yokoyama says he will handle it.
For now, I should remove it.

It's almost December and snow is forecasted for everyday next week.
It might simply be easier to cover up everything and wait till next Spring. This year's winter is projected to be short anyway due to El Nino.

Tasks

  • remove top and bottom strips

Purchase materials

Blocked by #1 , we don't know how much material we need

We're getting mostly 12ft (3650mm) long lumber but the walls probably will not be longer than 2400mm. 12ft lumber is only ¥100 more than 8ft lumber so the additional 1200mm offcuts can be used for blocking and stuff like that.

List of materials

  • 羽子板沓石 x 14
  • 75mm styrofoam x ?
  • 2x4 12FT 42, 17, 15, 9, 12, 13: ~¥135,000
  • 構造用合板 43 ~¥80,000 replace with ハイベストウッド from Yokoyama
  • 耐水透湿シート
  • WoodLong Eco
  • caulking

Update plans

Description

Some parts of the plans need updating. Now that the windows and entrances have been finalised, we can finally put in the real dimensions, most importantly using the inner dimensions for the framing.

I would also like to make some changes. Initially the plan was to use a 12FT piece of timber + some off cuts to get to the long side. I've now realised that it's simply to have the short sides extend to the edge, and have the long wall connect to it rather than vice versa.

Also, I want to add an overhang over the windows and entrance way.

Tasks

  • update framing plans
  • include windows in framing plans
  • add overhang around window and entrance way

Garage extensions

This not shed related but I need a place to keep track of home DIY projects without creating a new repo. Maybe I should just rename this one.

Description

Prep for winterising the garage. Rough overview.

Build a wall around the back to keep the snow out. Have a door that opens inwards. Or a sliding barn door. Unsure yet which to use.

Around the front, build an enclosure that extends the opening out into the asphalt so both vehicles can be parked, and the snow blower can be moved in/out easily.

For the sides, put up the air curtains we got last year, but secure them with wooden battens instead of tiny metal hooks that break with the slightest breeze.

Purpose of this issue is for planning.

Measurents

  • Long height 2900
  • Short height 2240
  • Block height 155
  • Garage width 3500
  • Driveway length 2700

Purchase tools

Tools to get

  • mitre saw
  • planer
  • nail gun
  • new circular saw?
  • new drill set?
  • multi-tool thingy
  • tent

windows and doors

Went down to Hakuba Glass with Yokoyama to discuss about the technical details.

  • waiting for quotation
  • put in the order
  • delivery
  • install door
  • install window
  • install glass

Wall insulation

Add insulation to all 4 wall. And cover with plastic sheathing to keep it air tight.

Remaining actions, instead of working in steps, we'll work agilely.

  • add a 50mm panel
  • add a 30mm panel
  • once a single wall section is complete cover with plastic sheathing

  • complete front wall big pieces insulation
  • complete right wall big pieces insulation
  • complete left wall big pieces insulation
  • complete back wall big pieces insulation
  • fill in the gaps with the smaller leftover pieces
  • buy 50mm and 30mm insulation panels, as much as available
  • caulk the gaps in floor panels
  • lay plastic sheathing

Complete plans

  • scaffolding plans
  • get window and door measurements
  • complete the plans
    • only front wall remaining
  • calculate how much material is required
    • 42 for scaffolding
    • walls 17, 15, 9, 12
    • roof 13
  • plywood 43
  • styrofoam
