@wildpeanut there is an option named SMTP_STARTTLS available for SMTP configurations. This setting is enabled by default.
I am using google apps smtp settings in my local install and have no problems sending emails using the "send test mail" option. I have only specified the SMTP_USER and SMTP_PASS options.
