The changes from commit b0c591a seem to have slowed things down just enough that I can detect it at runtime when running on a large display, over the network (ssh + screen + mutt), from a remote host that is a hair long in the tooth.

There were a couple of suboptimal things I deliberately left in place in that commit because they make debugging easier, and at the time I didn't notice any obvious change in the speed. But now that I'm using the change as part of my normal workflow, they make mutt feel just sluggish enough that I notice it in this one use case. There's an extra partial-second of lag for the operations that trigger the $index_format pipe on a large number of messages -- not so much that it affects real usability, but slower than it was before so it is annoying.

Just thinking out loud...

Would be nice to be able to map the 'username' portion of a mailing list address to an arbitrary string that gets displayed in the mutt index. Thinking here about the relatively common pattern of apache mailing lists addressed in the form [email protected] and [email protected] -- both show up as 'users', but it would be nice to instead see 'foobar-users' and 'bazquux-users' in the mutt index.
