Ironically I just read that the Arduino Uno comes pre-loaded with StandardFirmata 2.2 ... except I didn't know that when I overwrote it to make an led blink... :)

I just followed the setup with a board from "reset" and it's working ok... probably a pain in the ass, but maybe start from scratch? Let me know how it goes :)

Yeah, I did do a full start from scratch a few times to no avail.

What version of IDE do you have?

I use the 1.0 IDE with Firmata 2.2

Okay, tried again and recorded a screencast - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2InaFMWgy8 - bottom line: no worky for me. I'm pretty sure that there's a link to the fact you set up on a "reset" state and mine had already been changed.

So if I use my default Arduino IDE 1.0.1 and Firmata 2.3 - any ideas of what I might need to do to get it working with Johnny Five?

Sorry, I lost track of all the file moving you were doing and even at full screen it's hard to see what is what :(

Just delete all the things related to Arduino IDE of all versions and use just IDE 1.0 with Firmata 2.2

Arduino 1.0.1 with Firmata 2.3 doesn't work, not sure why. I can't test anything right now because all of my gear is in New York and I'm in Boston. I feel bad about this because it seems like your having issues that no one else has had (the worst we had before was no connection after installing, which is what happens with 2.3)

If I have to I will go to Microcenter and buy a kit :)

Note that this only applies to Mac - I've not tested this on linux or windows - equally, I can't confirm the problem is on linux or windows either.

Right, I've fixed it. I'm certain the documentation is out of date though. If you do a fresh download of Arduino IDE 1.0 (the link you provide in the README) you shouldn't be able to compile the StandardFirmata 2.2 example (because Arduino IDE 1.0 renames WProgram.h to Arduino.h and some of the API changes). This is after you've swapped out Firmata 2.3 with 2.2 in the Resources folder of the app of course.

Downloading (what I can only assume is) the very last release before 1.0: version 0023 then I'm able to open the StandardFirmata example and it's able to verify the code (which of them means I can deploy it to the board). 0023 also comes with Firmata 2.2 so there's no need to swap it out anyway.

Obviously I'm not keen on running an older IDE, but really I just need it to deploy the software that Johnny Five needs to hook in to - so as a work around, I'm happy.

@remy I can't tell you how much of a relief this is and how excited I am to have your attention on the project.

As soon as I'm finished with travelling I want to address the IDE/Firmware issue and kill the bug for good

Can we use latest IDE and firmata with Johnny Five ? The documentation still states 2.2. Let me know if I missed some doc.

rwaldron avatar rwaldron commented on July 22, 2024

@sreekarun there used to be issues, but that is no longer the case. I've updated the readme—Thanks!!
