For comparision, the group::Group trait has an associated type Scalar: ff::PrimeField, which constrains the scalars to be canonical.

I think this issue is obsoleted by recent changes:

  • The type mentioned in the OP is now called ScalarBytes and is a type alias to GenericArray<u8, _>. As bytes, these are expected to be able to contain any value.
  • Crates with arithmetic each have their own Scalar type
  • The Scalar type is now an associated type of the elliptic_curve::Arithmetic trait

In that regard, the concrete Scalar types for each crate enforce the invariants described in the OP.
