The branching situation is a catastrophe

I've been maintaining multiple branches, especially for OSX. This is unworkable as merging is too infrequent and cherry-picking the commits I want from the branch into master is always a nightmare. Work out some logic to merge everything into master e.g. so that the scripts are portable between GNU/Linux and OSX.
