macOS 13.6.2
Finbar 1.12.2 (12)
Hi there,
Is it possible to disable the shortcut to Applications which already have a command pallete (e.g. Obsidian). So it would "allways" stay the same shortcut: e.g Command+P, and either the command pallet shows up, or the menu-bar-search.
Thanks + kind Regards,
Johannes
Getting the following accessibility permission error message when attempting to use Finbar on Slack:
Finbar is prohibited from using your Mac's accessibility features. Grant access in System Settings.
Finbar already has the permission, it works well in other apps. Restarting does not help.
I am on MacOS 13.5 (22G74) with Finbar 13.5 (22G74)
Compared to Paletro, Finbar's loading speed is noticeably slower. Each time I open it, I'm met with a loading animation. Improving this aspect would definitely enhance the overall user experience.
When navigating MacOS menus using a keyboard, the right arrow key discloses submenus (similarly, the left arrow key navigates back up the chain). Finbar, as a replacement / accelerator for accessing menu items, should mimic this behavior.
This is not the case using Finbar 1.7.3, which places focus for left / right arrow keys in the text input (Search) field. At the same time, the up / down arrow keys have the expected behavior of acting upon the search results. All arrow keys should affect the same portion of the UI.
The ability to fully navigate menu items (search results) from the arrow keys is more valuable than the ability to move the textual input cursor. This is further exasperated by the small number of keys Finbar appears to require to access long menu titles (the New Tab example video on the product page highlights this precisely [0]).
This was the first thing I tried to do with the app. Having to move to the Return key to activate a submenu and then back to the arrow keys to navigate is a non-starter. This would be especially problematic on Apple laptops that lack the inverted T keys (the so-called "butterfly keyboards"). In keeping with the behavior of the native menus, Finbar should be fully navigable via the arrow keys. The current behavior does not feel Mac-like.
In case this sounds like criticism, it's not. The app is very intriguing and clearly polished. Cheers!

On the first run of Finbar I wanted to set a hotkey so I summoned preferences.
I can't remember if I used Cmd+Comma or the menu bar item
I've never seen a preferences window appear like this: it was "on" the lower left corner, partially off screen.
I can't get it to reproduce, I'll try reinstalling later
I'd expect a preferences window to be centred on the current display (ie the display that Finbar was summoned on if there's more than one display)
My setup
It took me the longest time to figure out how to add "any/all" rules. I don't know how I hadn't already stumbled across option-clicking the plus sign before, but I hadn't. I didn't even realize it was possible at first and was going to ask for it as a feature request. (Note: this is all on me, not you! Your docs were clear and accurate; I just didn't know how to use the rule editor.)
A sentence like "option-click to add nested rules", or maybe even a screenshot demonstrating it, would be helpful to other clueless people like me. 🙂
As far as I can tell, Finbar doesn't work if the current application is in full-screen mode.
When working with multiple displays, the window isn't centred across displays. Let's say it is first launched on the MacBook screen and when launched on the other screen thereafter, it's launched not centred.
Although the option exists in the options menu, it'd be nice to have it do that automatically.
Most BBEdit menu commands are listed in Finbar as disabled. Selecting them plays the alert sound. All commands I've tried are accessible using the macOS Help menu. I haven't been able to discern a pattern for which commands are unavailable.
I hope there's a way to fix this. BBEdit is so feature-packed with menu commands that it would be perfect to control with Finbar.
Any menu item selected in the Vivaldi browser doesn't seem to do anything. However it seems like the problem is within Vivaldi itself as selecting menu items through the Mac’s help menu doesn't work either.
