I take it all back. not having used godot, I simply did cmd-r (assuming r is for run). turns out, running the project is cmd-b, so I'm not sure what the other thing I did was.
for me it does not seem to work in godot 3.2.1 + macos mojave.
I get this, when I run the project:

That's an old MacOSX issue. See #140 for MacOSX status.
