namebench's Issues

Please Remove the University of Kansas DNS Servers

We would not like any of the University of Kansas DNS servers listed as
"public servers" in the namebench app even though many do allow recursive
queries to the world. All DNS servers in the 129.237.0.0/16 address space
are intended to be used by University staff, faculty, students, and
affiliates only.

Please remove the following:

129.237.32.1 (finch.cc.ku.edu)
129.237.133.1 (kuhub.cc.ku.edu)

As well as anything else in the 129.237.0.0/16 address space.

Thanks,

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Install Python 3.x
2. Run!

So far it's just the msg() implementation, but I suspect dependency issues

Slow replica detection has false positives

I've seen CheckCacheCollusion() report sharing relationships where there
clearly are none.
Investigate.

setup.py: third_party should install under libnamebench to avoid conflicts

Right now third_party gets installed in the python library path. It is possible
that other utilities
(most likely Google ones) may use this same path and conflict with these
libraries. setup.py should
be altered so that third_party is installed under libnamebench.

Fedora Linux 12: Tk UI did not open web browser

Ran nb-1.0 on fedora linux f12. Ran OK, but never gave any indication
where to find the graph output. On the console I saw
" Opening /tmp/namebench_2009-12-05_0720.html"

Opening this file, I see my graph - but nb never said anything on the
console or in the gui about it.

namebench should exclude consistently terrible system DNS servers

If a system DNS server has a consistent history of failures (say, 3+), it
should be canned instead of
hanging around and slowing all of the tests down. Normal nameservers get canned
on the first error
already.

Windows: self-extract progress bar never closes until namebench exits

1. Open namebench-1.0.exe in Windows
2. Progress bar window opens
3. namebench.exe opens once progress bar reaches 100%
4. Progress bar stays in background until namebench.exe is closed.

This is an artifact of the Zip 2 Secure EXE packaging we use. This bug will
either need to be fixed on their end or a suitable replacement is found.

Feature Rquest - Source ports

As mentioned in this article:
http://blog.internetnews.com/skerner/2009/12/is-google-public-dns-safe-look.html

Could namebench also scan a DNS server's source ports?
Just enough to display a scatter-plot graph so we can determine the
pseudo-randomness with our human eyes.

Also can anyone suggest a project that already does this?

The Tcl/Tk
libraries shipped with Fedora 11 appear to be compiled without

I'm looking for any workarounds I can do now.
